Review the articles linked with each individual motive in the presentation page or Slide #4.  Rank the motives from 1 to 7 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 7).  Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it.

  1. For Money

Financial gain is often the biggest motivator for crimes. Many participate in data breaches and ransomware for profit. That’s why I believe this is first.

  1. Political

Ideologies and activism often drives hackers to hack the government. Political motives are second place due to the beliefs that hackers have around the world. 

  1. Revenge 

Personal problems make revenge a highly emotional act. Usually it’s done with a grudge against a certain individual. Its emotional aspect places it in third place. 

  1. Recognition:

Some cybercriminals seek out recognition or fame for their work. Recognition is a powerful motivator which places this in fourth. 

  1. Multiple Reasons 

Many criminals have a mix of motivators such as money, politics, recognition, etc. But this category is too broad, landing it fifth. 

  1. Entertainment

Hacking for fun isn’t a common motive. The consequences of cybercrime is to high for doing something for fun, landing it sixth place. 

  1. Boredom

Hacking out of boredom are the least likely and compelling reasons for cybercrime, earning it last place.
