There are multiple components of every business from customer service to IT. Each part is unique and adds value to the overall organization. IT can serve as a backbone to all other departments and achieve high efficiency within itself.
The parts of a business
Besides the typical components of a business, other areas include: customer service, supply chain management, and technical infrastructure.
The way they fit into the greater whole of a business is unique to each part. Customer service fits into an organization through sales. In customer service, the customer is helped before, during, and after the sale. For supply chain management, it has a crucial role in the operations part of an organization. It supports production, logistics, and inventory management. This part of an organization usually reports to the head of operations. For technical infrastructure, its role is making sure all the systems are running smoothly and can enable the other departments to operate correctly. This department is also typically a part of the IT department and would report to the head of infrastructure or the IT director.
How IT fits into a business
When it comes to IT within organizations, it can fit into many different areas and act as a back bone to different departments. When organizations Utilize IT, they can achieve desired outcomes through technology (Aligning IT, 2023). In a way, this field can hold an organization together. It can “deliver information, data, voice communications, video content, and other forms of communication to both internal stakeholders and external customers” (Brin, 2024).
The role of IT within a business can fit into areas such as marketing, sales, operation management and human resources (Brin, 2024). IT can support marketing and sales by providing tools for data analytics, customer relationship management (CRM), and digital marketing platforms (Gargaro, 2024) It enables targeted campaigns, tracks customer behavior, automates outreach, and improves lead management. All of which are responsibilities that can be given to an IT department. IT can support Human Resources and Operations Management by automating HR workflows. This includes onboarding, payroll, benefits, managing HR systems like HRIS, ensuring data accuracy, enabling reporting and analytics, as well as improving operational efficiencies across multiple departments (Gargaro 2024). Overall, the level of technology that IT brings to an organization can make the different parts of a business work more smoothly and efficiently as opposed to without them having an IT department.
There’s multiple ways that an IT department can be organized. Some different ways include centralized IT, Decentralized IT and a functional model (Kerner, n.d.). An aspect that is similar throughout all organizational options is that there’s a chief information officer and different departments underneath it. Centralized is best for large companies that need strong governance since all aspects are managed. In decentralized, each unit can make their own decisions therefore its best for businesses with diverse products (kerner, n.d.). “A functional IT model organizes teams around specific IT capabilities rather than business units” (Kerner, n.d.). This is best for companies that need a thorough team. Which one is best would depend on what the organization is aiming to accomplish with their IT department or what the goal overall is for the company.
Conclusion
In conclusion, IT plays a vital role across all areas of a business by supporting operations, enhancing efficiency, and enabling strategic goals through technology. Its structure and integration depend on the organization’s size and needs but are essential for overall success.
