Artifact / Skills Problem Solving

For my problem‑solving artifact, I chose my main project from my Virginia Tech internship, where my team and I worked with eye‑tracking technology in VR headsets. This project required a lot of technical problem‑solving because our goal was to figure out how to make the eye‑tracking system work better and produce more accurate data. Before we could improve anything, we first had to understand what eye‑tracking could actually help with — such as user attention, focus points, reaction time, and how people interact with virtual environments.

Once we understood the purpose and potential of eye‑tracking, the real problem‑solving began. The eye‑tracking data wasn’t always consistent, and sometimes the headset sensors didn’t pick up eye movement correctly. We had to break down each issue step‑by‑step, test different calibration methods, adjust the VR environment, and experiment with how lighting, movement, and user behavior affected the results. Every time the data came out wrong or incomplete, we had to figure out why and test new solutions.

This artifact shows my problem‑solving skills because the project didn’t come with clear instructions or guaranteed answers. We had to troubleshoot constantly, think creatively, and analyze the data to understand what was going wrong. I learned how to stay patient, how to test multiple approaches, and how to work through technical challenges without getting frustrated.

This experience also connects directly to my long‑term goals in IT and cybersecurity. Both fields require strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to solve problems when the solution isn’t obvious. Working with eye‑tracking technology helped me build confidence in handling complex systems and taught me how to approach technical challenges with a calm, logical mindset.

Overall, this artifact represents my growth in problem‑solving and shows that I can take on advanced technical projects, break down complicated issues, and work toward solutions that improve the final outcome.
