QR Code

I create a QR code for an icivics game my students play a lot. I used QRCode Monkey, and it was very, very simple to do. This would be useful for kids to access the link on their own devices.

I’ve used QR codes for back to school night for parents to get to important school links quickly.

Virtual Field Trip

I explored WWI trenches at this site: https://artsandculture.google.com/story/RQVxLms4jLzWJQ. The recreated scenes allow the viewer to really feel like they are there. This would help students understand events of the past. WWI sounds like a long time ago, and with black and white photography, it’s easy to think its irrelevant to us today. This virtual field trip brings it to life. I was particularly grossed out thinking about trench foot. When you read about it, you can kind of ignore the details of it. Looking at the picture of the man inspecting the other man’s toes made me shudder. It added more details to my understanding of life in the trenches. I know that these pictures were a reenactment, but it also brought up just how young these soldiers were. Many of them looked like teenagers. Field trips like these would help students immerse themselves in history.

In My Own Library

First, I think I would use virtual field trips for other content areas. I know at my school sometimes it is hard to get other classes besides the English department involved. I think doing virtual field trips in the library for other subjects, such as science and history would encourage more frequent library usage.

I could also see me using a Bitmoji classroom set up to organize frequently used links and other relevant resources. I’ve seen some that have book covers with links to either a read aloud or a book talk from the librarian. I think that would be a good idea to help build a community of readers. It would be neat to incorporate student book talks or book trailers into the space as well.

Your idea to use Bitmoji as a way to incorporate book talks is a great idea…I think there is a lot of potential with this!!

I didn’t even think about using virtual field trips to explore something thing connected to history! What a great idea! I like how you use QR codes on back to school night. I think I will use QR codes to gather information from the parents instead of having them fill out a piece of paper.

Nice job Laura. Am I correct that you’re in a secondary school? I’m in an elementary school and it’s so interesting to me that the Language Arts/Literacy group is so separate from Library Services. We have a much better working relationship in general with Social Studies and Science folks.

I absolutely agree with you about the library and English class being tied together. So often other content areas forget what is available to them at the library. The WWI field trip sounds fascinating, and I’m sure it would be very useful to history classes.
