Cell biology taught me how the structure and function of cells are connected to disease processes, which is very important in medical laboratory science. For instance, learning about cell membranes and how things move through them helped me understand better how drug interactions and electrolyte imbalances affect cells on a very small scale. This information is related to lab work, like looking at blood samples, where changes in the shape of cells or the integrity of the membrane can show that someone has anemia or an infection. I learned how to use lab tests like glucose or lactate measurements to find problems in cellular respiration and metabolism by studying them. Also, learning about cell signaling pathways helped me understand how biomarkers are used to find diseases and keep track of how well treatment is working. In general, cell biology helped me connect small changes in cells to real diagnostic results, which is an important skill in medical laboratory science.
