The article, “Social cybersecurity an Emerging National Security Requirement” by Lt. col. David M. Beskow and Kathleen M. Carley, discusses the emergence of social cybersecurity in the importance of national security in modern warfare of America. A Russian tactic used is information warfare; it uses information to strengthen one’s narrative while undermining societal values by corroding trust and Russia can gain warfare strategies and advantages before the conflict begins. Social cybersecurity blends many different fields like sociology, political science, and psychology to analyze human and societal behavior. The shift towards human manipulation in warfare has been driven by technology to manipulate information flow and societal beliefs by using social media as a source. This explains how external agencies can exploit this decentralization to influence societies and manipulate people, this is called social cyber maneuver. In conclusion the article argues that having an understanding of social cybersecurity is crucial for national defense to implement precautions of vulnerabilities to external manipulation.
