Artifact 5

Last I chose Module 8 that focused in chapter 6 personality and culture. Archive 6 was interesting in the fact I had to pick a scenario where I was not reacting how I normally would and how that was outside the scope of my regular personality traits. I am usually a laid back person and do not take many things to heart but the moment I was reflecting on I was furious and became very hostile and bossy because I did not trust anyone in the situation with me. This is due to how I was brought up because I was taught to take charge of situation if there is no one stepping up to the plate especially if your reputation is at stake.

The sub emotions that I experienced were angry hostility and assertiveness.

Module 14 was certainly interesting and doing archive 12 helped me understand chapter 10 about culture and psychological disorders. The archive asked to write about two concepts that related to mental disorders and culture. I chose how culture shapes the expression of psychological disorders and psychological disorders found in my own culture. I know that for African Americans mental health is a tough subject to bring up and comes with a unique set if stressors and potential for psychological disorders. For one mental health is not a big topic in most African American homes because it is commonly seen as a behavioral problem that can be fixed in the home and does not require outside help. Some of the most prevalent psychological disorders that African Americans face is depression and anxiety disorder. On another hand, the strong sense of community and family is something that boost resilience against psychological disorders.

I chose this image because mental health shows itself through symptoms but the causes of those symptoms may be different based in cultural background.

Artifact 3

I chose module 10 or archive 8 because I found the exercise interesting. I was given a list of people by their relationship with me such as parent, friends, colleague and such and was asked how ling I would be willing to wait for each person. I had different times for each with my parent having the longest wait time and a client getting the least amount of wait time. This was because my wait time had to due with how much I cared about each person. The more I cared the longer I was willing to wait. This focused on chapter 8 and had to do with cognition and culture. Culture has an influence over things like perception and time is something people perceive differently.

This image was chosen because what played a big role in my perception of time is how much I cared about something.

Artifact 2

Module 5 came in second because the topic of enculturation was my favorite to read on. This focused on chapter 3. So when I was filling out the worksheet I noticed that a lot of my values did not align with my parents and when I looked at it aligned more with my peer’s views. I was raised by my mother and she is a white woman and my father was not in the picture so most of my influence came from the kids in my neighborhood. My grandmother really pushed me to form connections with the other black kids in my neighborhood in a way to get me to experience some of my culture I was missing in the household. So I can really acquaint my values with my grandmother and the kids of the neighborhood I grew up in.

This is a picture of my grandmother and sisters. My grandmother had a big influence on my views and values

Artifact 1

My favorite artifact to complete was from module 3, it was the first item we had to archive. This archive focused in chapter 1. It asked my favorite question which was to show something that represented my culture. I always chose my hair because African Americans have been able to find so much of their identity and a link to their culture in their hair. This is shown in how we style our hair to how we care for it. This was relevant to chapter 1 because it is introducing us to culture and what makes culture so relevant to people and I immediately thought about my hair and how it connected me to other people like me and had the same ideas and experiences as me.

This photo was chosen because it shows how my hair is a form of expression in how I chose to wear it and what it represents to others like me.
