Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication
Effective Reflection
During this course I did struggle a lot I would say I grew a little bit but not as much as I should’ve. The main challenges I had in this course had to do with the speaking part. The verbal assignments gave me the most trouble. Verbal exercises were by far my biggest weakness. I would say one of the small amount of strengths I had was listening and reading the words written in spanish and determining which mutiple choice answer was best. I thought sometimes I was a bit lucky but I have a much easier time listening and reading spanish rather than speaking it. I freeze up and get extremely nervous when I must speak spanish. I can’t describe why I just can’t do it. I already get have public speaking problems now speaking English so learning a new language has been difficult.

I was also expecting futbol to be more popular than it was in the video. I would say my favorite sport is American football.
This discussion board assignment was from discussion board number seven when we had to watch a video and listen to what the most popular sport was in the video. I was able to sort of listen well and tell what sports were most common.

Exploring Culture
I always realized how religious and family oriented the Hispanic community was but, I did not have as much as of an idea until taking this class. We had a discussion board on if gender was a big factor in jobs and it seemed to be a big factor for their community. This article we read for discussion board number six talks about the importance of family in the Hispanic culture.

This assignment made me sort think about how Hispanic families are so close and manage to always maintain a family and no matter what they always seem to stick together and be there for their people regardless of the situation. They always help each other out and I never see any problems within their community. I believe it’s because they are so religious and take it seriously. Especially if they moved here to the United States for a better life and more opportunities. I have a friend I grew up with and he always said his family sticks together because they know the opportunities they can create by working together. The life they have here is a lot better than the one they had back in his country and he told me he believes people that are born here in the U.S. don’t understand how grateful they are. This is the land of opportunity. His words really spoke to me for this section because when I recently spoke to him we had this discussion. He changed my view on how I want to operate when it comes to just being grateful for what I have and recognizing how important having a close family really is.
Engaging in Communities
It is important to engage in your community because you realize how many people truly need help and how big of a difference you can make just by donating your time and resources. You can also come to a realization that you could be in that persons shoes and it could be you who might need help one day and would want someone to help you out. I think it’s a matter of do you want to make a difference in your lifetime. Some people want to only focus on themselves and use all their time for self improvement, which is fine. Some want to make change and be a person that uses their time and energy to try and advance their community forward into the right direction.
Interpersonal Communication
I did a talk abroad last semester and the lady I spoke with was very nice and cut me short of a break on my assignment. We spoke about about our interest in like sports, movies, and exercising.
The discussion board posts helped me gain a certain amount of knowledge from other people and other countries because we had to interact with people in the comment section. The most difficult thing for me was speaking in spanish and trying to get what I was thinking out out my mouth as clear as possible for people to understand me on the speaking assignment.
I excel in the listening part an matching the words with the pictured example above. I don’t know if I had sort of an idea about what the words meant just by looking at them and the word looked similar to the English spelling of the word. I officially learned while taking Spanish that I am a visual learner. I have to look at things over and over again and have a picture of the word and write it out. I’m a hands on learner.
Presentational Speakin
My last day of work I had to speak to my fellow employees at work on how to complete a job faster. I was good at my job and my hiring manager wanted me to demonstrate how I would get my job done fast and efficiently. I just broke it down into a few steps and went into specific detail on how I arranged things and how I would handle certain situations. It required me to interpret myself clear for others to understand and I often times like in spanish had to repeat the same steps so I would be able to communicate and help others and myself by getting their point of view.
Presentational Writing
I had a power point presentation for my business class about starting a business. I decided on starting a mobile detailing business. My presentation was short but not too short, and specific to the point on why I wanted to open a business and what makes my service different from everyone else.
I had to talk to my professor over the phone and present this to her while I was reading from it and give her some addition information on my project. The link to my power point is listed below.
Interpretive Listening
Interpretive listening was a common activity we had on Lingro learning. There were multiple assignments’ where we had to listen what was being said and then either type what we heard, select an answer on what was said, or speak what we heard as well.
This video is a perfect example of having to listen to what was being said and remember what was said in order to complete an assignment. This was one of the assignments we had earlier during the semester and they talked about their favorite sport. This activity was not as hard because the sport terms are not as hard to remember, so I did not have that much trouble with this discussion board post.
Interpretive Reading
The Lingro Learning modules when we had to read a short paragraph and then find the adverbs, and find whatever the question was asking. For example 8 sentences would be typed and we would have to find at least 7 words that were food. We probably had a decent amount of reading assignments. I would say these are my least favorite and hardest assignments because my vocal skills are terrible.
