The purpose of this assignment was simple: create a social media account with my own persona. This excited me because the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina are currently ongoing, which meant that this was the perfect time for me to become a sports reporter, something I’ve always been interested in.
I chose to act as a sort of TeamUSA update or news profile because it would be easiest to sound enthusiastic for my own country’s performance at the Olympic Games. The social media site I chose was X/Twitter because it keeps captions short, and it felt the most necessary for a news-type outlet. I named the account MilanoCortinaUpdates after the location of the Winter Olympics and the fact that I would be posting updates from the games. One aspect I added to the posts to get more impressions was to add relavent hashtags like #TeamUSA and #Olympics.
The following are the posts that I created and the explanations behind them.
My first post was just a simple mid-Olympics medal count update. I chose the use the picture for the figure skating team event because I loved watching this event and love figure skating at a sport.
Following the motivation behind the previous post, this one features the USA Women’s Hockey team as it continued its winning streak and demolishes the shutout length record by beating Sweden 6-0 in the semi-finals. I love hockey and to support my country through that sport just makes it that much more special.
There is sort of a trend forming with these posts, they all are ice-related sports. I enjoy watching the precision required to perform at such a high level on such a tricky surface.
Following this trend of ice sports, my next post was on the USA women’s hockey team defeating rivals Canada in the gold medal game by overcoming a 0-1 deficit to win 2-1 in overtime. This marks just the third time the women have won the gold medal.
For my last post, I chose to switch it up. This post was made just 30 minutes after Alex Ferreira ended his quest for Olympic gold after achieving both silver and bronze in previous Olympics. I’ve always wanted to watch a halfpipe event since the games started and I seemed to always miss it so for me to catch the medal event where TeamUSA takes home yet another gold, felt so good.
