From Student to Sport Communicator: Semester Reflection

Over the past three months in Sport Communication, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of how intricate and fast-paced the industry actually is. What stood out the most is that sports communication today goes far beyond traditional reporting. In reality, it’s about branding and creating meaningful digital connections. This course challenged me to think more strategically and creatively about how sports content is produced and shared.

One of the most valuable parts of this course was building this blog. What started as a simple assignment has evolved into a professional portfolio that reflects both my work and growth as a communicator. I’ve learned how important it is not only to have strong ideas but also to present them in a clear and visually engaging way. Having to think about layout, readability, and the audience’s experience has given me skills that I can apply directly to a future role in sport media.

The assignments that had the biggest impact on me were the ones where I had to build a relationship with a real professional in sports communication. For this, I reached out to Lauren Rivera-Galvez, the current sports information director for lacrosse, field hockey, and both men’s/women’s tennis at Old Dominion University. This relationship allowed me to connect classroom concepts to real-world applications. More importantly, this relationship may lead to future opportunities in the sports industry as I continue to build it with Lauren. Through these conversations, I learned how important adaptability, networking, and consistency are in this field. It also showed me that success in the world of sports communication requires more than just simple technical skills. It requires strong relationships and the ability to stay current in a constantly evolving industry.

Another major takeaway from this course is the role of ethics in the world of professional sports communication. Whether it’s representing athletes, managing a brand’s image, or considering how content impacts audiences, sports communicators have real influence. This course made me aware of the responsibility that comes with that influence, as well as the importance of maintaining trust with audiences.

Looking ahead, I can definitely see myself pursuing a career in sports media, specifically in content creation, photography, or social media. This course has given me insight and knowledge of how to network with professionals and how to use certain skills to my advantage. More importantly, it has shown me that success in this field requires creativity, strategic thinking, and the ability to adapt in a constantly evolving digital landscape.

Overall, this course didn’t just teach me about sports communication, it’s helped me take the first real steps toward becoming a sports communicator myself. The combination of professional insight and creative work has prepared me to continue building my skills and pursuing opportunities in the sports industry.
