Toulmin Argument
As the final essay for the semester for English 211C, the class completed a Toulmin argumentative essay. The Toulmin essay is an organizational structure that arranges the argument in a logical manner. This six-part argument analysis includes a claim, data, warrant, backing, rebuttal, and qualifier. This assignment’s purpose was to improve my ability to examine an argument holistically and to utilize the knowledge received from my research in order to increase my persuasiveness. I learned a lot while completing the Toulmin essay. It taught me another form to persuade my opponent in a rational and assertive manner, unlike the Rogerian essay. Learning multiple ways to convey a message to my target audience will help me with both law and my English major. For example, arguing in a logical structure can help defend my client in a civil case. Another example is being able to write and effectively argue for a position on a topic given by the professor.
