SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

While studying on the LingroLearning Website I was able to gain knowledge of exploring the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. This would give brief descriptions of people in the Spanish-speaking world where I was able to get to know their hobbies and personal life is like. In these specific examples, I learned about how LGBT rights are evolving in the Spanish-speaking world.

While studying this Exploración Cultural helped me gain a better understanding of the values in the Hispanic Culture. I found this very interesting while getting to know the unique experiences of countries because I have never experienced different countries. It was an exciting process to see how the values and attitudes in the Hispanic culture are very different. I enjoyed being able to learn about another culture while learning its language. The most challenging part of this was since I am only experienced in Spanish 101 and 102, I was still learning some words and their meanings. Although LingroLearning made it easy to figure out while reading through different people’s perspectives.

Engaging in Communities

The value and importance of engaging in my immediate and global community are because it helps me learn and I was able to get the most out of engaging in the community.

I do not have much experience in engaging in the Spanish community, although I have attended all my Spanish classes here at ODU. This semester has been a great but tough experience learning a new language. I have always wanted to learn how to speak Spanish so I am glad I get the opportunity here in college.

Interpersonal Communication

In this audio below I completed an assignment where I asked a fluent Spanish speaker questions about themselves including 3 personal questions and 3 about what she studies on campus.

I was still very new to the Spanish language so this project was challenging but fun! I was lucky to have a friend who has already become fluent in Spanish so working with her made it easy. My friend Alanna even gave me some tips and pointers to correct my pronunciation and how to say certain words. I feel that compared to now I can see the growth as I look back on all the projects we have done this semester. I think the most difficult thing was remembering the pronunciation of certain words. With lots of practice, I have gotten a lot better! If I have to do a project like this again I would try to ask more questions and try to have conversations back with Alanna.

Presentational Speaking

This presentational speaking activity I completed was for the Unit 4 project. In this video, I talked about my favorite places around campus here at ODU.

This project was fun and exciting to do although I did run into some challenges while preparing for the video. I had to use Ser, Estar, and Haber and I struggled to figure out how to use these throughout out my video. I overcame this challenge by practicing and going to a class where my professor helped me and my classmates workshop things to say. This was a big help because it gave me more ideas of things to say and how to say them correctly. I feel I did well on describing the different places around campus but if I had to do this project again I would add more details about different places around campus.

In this video, I talk about 3 of my favorite places on campus!

Presentational Writing

This is an example of my spanish writting skills I have learned this semster. This was one of the first projects I did for Spanish 101. I learned how to write and introduce myself and say personal infomation.

Since this was one of the first projects I did I have noticed a difference in growth while looking back at this project. In this project, I introduced myself and told some basic information about myself. For example, I said my first and last name, age, email address, telephone number, birthday, and where I am from. I had to use words with Ser, Estar, and Tenar which at first was a little difficult but once we worked shopped things in class and I reviewed my lesson on LingroLearning it became very easy.

Interpretive Listening

On the website LingroLearning I gained Interpretive Listening skills while listening to certain Spanish phrases. I learned a lot from these because it was nice to here statements being said in Spanish. I had to be able to know what they where saying and figure out what kind of verbs and words they where saying.

In these Listening activities it where very beneficial to listen to a Spanish phrase. When I first started doing these it was hard to understand but as my education in Spanish went on it started to become easier as I learned more. I overcame most of this difficulty with just lots of practice. I found it interesting to learn new vocabulary words that I had not heard before. This was something that I took with me throughout doing other projects at the end of each unit. I was able to add new words that weren’t in the lesson plan while speaking Spanish.

Interpretive Reading

On Lingrolearning I also had lots of reading practice in Spanish. In this example, we had to read and decided if the statement was true or false.

When I first started my reading skills in Spanish it was difficult to understand the different verbs and what they mean. As I continued to practice I started to get the hang of it and it got easier. I found it very interesting to learn the different meanings while also getting practice in my Interpretive reading skills.
