For each class that I feel the need to study for, I spend about 2 hours average. Some of my classes however, such as dance, I don’t feel the need to spend as much time on when I could be studying/working on other assignments. I do need to put more time in. My chemistry, sociology, and history classes require the most attention, but I don’t pay as much attention as I should.
I mostly study at my job. I work at an office upstairs in Constant Hall and I have full access to the computers and its quiet, so I like studying up there. If I’m not working, I’ll study in my room. I don’t get distracted if I’m at work studying because there’s nothing to distract me but if I’m in my room I get distracted by my roommates, phone, TV, etc. I could remove these by turning off my phone and TV or just go in the study room.
The times of day I like to study are between 2-5 and 8-10pm. Those are my “free times”. I feel alert from 8-10pm because I’m more of a night person, I don’t like doing things in the morning.
The techniques I use are writing info on flashcards and studying them and reading info, and then writing it down in multiple different handwritings (weird but it helps). These are the same from class to class unless I’m learning chemistry because that sometimes includes math. I tried study groups, but it didn’t help me. I must learn on my own or I won’t learn.
College in ways has and hasn’t been what I expected. I expected to have a lot of work and miss my family, but I didn’t expect to be lonely and gain so much weight already. I am surprised that I have made so many friends because I’m not good at making friends. My toughest challenge has been doing my laundry and chores in general. Its funny because I did all that stuff at home and in the apartment I lived in over the summer but when nobody is breathing down your neck to do it, you just forget about it or don’t care. The easiest challenge to overcome is going to classes, I thought I would want to skip but I don’t.
One challenge I have faced was fighting with my roommate. We’re friends from home and we had a fight and didn’t speak for almost 2 days. I didn’t really use any resources on campus to fix it, but I could have consulted my RA. The person who has helped me the most has been Jacob. He told me how to handle classes, professors, bad decisions, peer pressure, help with my major. Just the little things that make a big difference. I haven’t attended any meetings for clubs, but I did sign up for the Homecoming Committee, it seemed fun and interesting. Also I was on the homecoming committee in high school and I enjoyed it.
