Your First Semester
- Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.
I have become more independent and taking charge in my future. I am trying to take responsibility for myself more and hold myself accountable.
- What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.
My expectations for this year was that it would be a hard adjustment. It has been hard, but I have adjusted quicker than I thought I would. This semester was a good transition period from high school to college life and I think it went well.
- What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?
Definitely start studying earlier than you think you need too, exams are worth a lot more than exams in high school.
Study Habits
- How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?
I spent way less time studying in the beginning of the year than compared to now, I think now that classes have picked up and passed the introductory aspects as well as exams coming up, my studying habits have increased.
- How have your study habits changed?
I am more diligent than I used to be, I am more responsible with my time and have learned the best ways to study that help me retain information the best.
- Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.
I have been using the library and study rooms in the dorms a lot to get together with friends and study material.
- What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?
Being on top of my classes and studying earlier on to be prepared for finals.
Health Professions Learning Community
- This semester you were enrolled in at least SOC 201S, and HLTH 101. Many of you were also enrolled in CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N, and some of you were enrolled in HIST 104H with Professor White.
- On the surface these classes do not appear to be connected; however this semester each professor was intentional about drawing connections between content, and subjects discussed. Discuss the ways in which these courses are tied together.
Many of the ideas in sociology and history were similar in the topics of inequality, one example is we discussed segregation and apartheid in sociology which was also discussed in history but in deeper explanation.
Parallel Plan
- This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.
- Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?
I thought nuclear medicine and public health were good, I thought the broadness of public health were interesting and also the professions you can get in nuclear med.
- What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?
In case I am unable to get into the dental hygiene program here at ODU or decide that this isn’t something I am interested in anymore.
- How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?
I could alway get a minor in these, more specifically public health, if I still find them interesting and have extra time to take classes for this.
