My second talk abroad conversation definitely went smoother than the first. For starters, I was less nervous just because I had already done it the first time, and much of the conversation content was going to be the same. My partner articulated well and spoke slowly so it was easy to understand him. I had a couple moment where I didn’t understand what he said, but he used gestures, gave examples and rephrased to help me get through it. It also helped that we had shared interests, music, video games and sports. We had a couple small side tangents about hobbies, but remained on topic primarily. much like to my previous partner, he took the reigns and asked the questions, which I preferred honestly. I didn’t notice as much difference in his accent and dialect as anticipated with him being from Haiti vs my Canadian partner. That said, he did use a few phrases I didn’t recognize and you could tell he was from another country, but it wasn’t huge. All in all, I think both of my conversation went well, at least, better than I thought they would. I’m glad I did them, and proud I was able to work through them!
