Community Values

We were given access to the Archives of Sexuality and Gender to help with our archival research. However, when trying to find new information through the Archives of Sexuality and Gender, I didn’t find new things outside of Our Own. The one new information I found that was extremely exciting was getting an anniversary date for when Outright opened. Which repeating what I said in my other blog, I think it’s important to have a date like this because it’s part of their history. It’s also hard to get a sense of when something had close since we don’t have the advance knowledge like we do now.

I think the reason Outright turned up empty is possibly due to them mostly advertising in Our Own. Another reason I think it was hard to find information on Outright is because Outright was more known local than anything else, so it makes sense to me that the only hit I got was through a local Queer newspaper. I did find some flyers, and an article that shows how active Outright was in the queer community despite not really being wrote about in a lot of articles.

I found it on Our Own, April 1995, pg 11

Outright was a part of a Women’s Musical Festival where you could pay tickets from to attend. The proceeds of the concert went to a local Women’s shelter. I did a quick Google search and found out that the headline band called Disappear Fear to find out they are well known in the queer community. Disappear Fear’s lyrics typically involved LGBT rights, and progressive political issues.

I found it on Our Own, September 1992, pg 3

Lastly, this article I ran across is showing Outright being a sponsor place for voting registration in the 1992 Presidential Election. Which ironically the Queer community is at risk of losing a bunch of rights if Trump gets reelected in office again. This reminds me if you are reading this make sure you vote on November 3rd. Your voice and effort matters.
