Journal Entry #5

  1. The most important motive would be for money. Money is the biggest driving factor behind a large amount of cyber crime, especially since things like ransomware are becoming more popular.
  2. I believe the 2nd most important motive would be multiple reasons, since cyber crime is usually committed not only for monetary gain, but for a combination of multiple things from this list, like monetary gain as well as recognition or revenge.
  3. The third most important motive would be for political gains. Many high-profile cyberattacks are political, like Stuxnet, which was an attack carried out by the U.S. and Israel on Iran’s nuclear weapons program.
  4. The fourth most important reason would be for recognition. Some groups commit cyber crime just to be recognized, but usually combine this with another reason, such as for monetary gain.
  5. The fifth most important reason would be for revenge. Some people will commit cyberattacks or cybercrime against groups in retaliation for doing things they don’t agree with, like putting certain laws in place, or maybe an employee was fired and wants to get back at their employer.
  6. The second to last most popular motive would be for entertainment. In the link listed, it says the man scraped LinkedIn for fun, but also did it to sell the data, so the driving factor behind what he did was most likely not just for entertainment.
  7. The least popular motive would be boredom. I believe that most people have a true reason that they commit cybercrime that isn’t just because they are bored. Most people are looking to gain something from committing crimes and don’t just do it because they are bored.
