The levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs are psychological, safety, belonging/love, esteem, and self-actualization. There are connections between this hierarchy and the ways people use and think about technology. Technology can be a psychological need, sometimes when I lose my phone or don’t have internet access I feel a little bit anxious. Keeping my technology safe is also a safety need, when I think my data might be compromised or I have a virus, I feel like my safety is at risk. I use social media for a sense of belonging by joining communities related to things that I enjoy doing, like online forums about cars. Technology can also impact self-esteem, especially social media. When I get positive comments on social media it makes me feel a little bit better about myself. Technology is widely used for self-actualization in today’s society. I use technology to learn how to fix things and use different programs that I use in my classes.
