Technology can help workplace deviance in two ways: by making it simpler to engage in the activity (for example, through information technology that offers more anonymity) and by making it simpler to conceal the behavior (e.g., through digital surveillance). Stealing trade secrets, disclosing private information, and posting content on social media that is against business or industry standards are a few examples of workplace misconduct enabled by technology. Cyber technology has opened up new possibilities because it is far more difficult to track down the victim of related cybercrimes when they are working behind a computer than when they are present and can, for example, be seen on a security camera. The definition of deviance, especially in social or sexual behavior, is “the fact or state of departing from usual or accepted standards.” Since workplace deviance can happen online rather than in person, which would be more difficult to identify, it can happen easily in the field of cyber technology. A common example of workplace deviance is when a dissatisfied worker decides to take it out on his company, whether it’s because he was fired or believes he was due for a promotion. For example, in the field of cyber technology, if an employee was fired from a job before he left, he could download important data and sell it to competitor businesses for profit. That employee may return to work and carry on hurting the business if his authorization wasn’t restricted. Disgruntled employees turning off their security systems and leaving the business open to attack is another example of cyber technology workplace deviation. By doing this, the business would be exposed to the possibility of hackers infiltrating the system and stealing vital data. This could potentially allow the employee to do more damage for a longer period of time before getting caught. Overall cyber technology has created more ways for workplace deviance to occur and has also made it easier to do and makes it harder to get caught. Workplace deviance will always occur in all types of work, but cyber technology makes it easier to execute.
