Journal Entry #2

Old Dominion University offers a variety of majors that cross into the world of Cybersecurity. Any major that stores data someway or simply utilizes computers or electronic devices can link back to cybersecurity. Switching my career path from Nursing made me realize that after all you can still work as a cybersecurity major in a hospital. One may ask how? Hospitals and other businesses utilize electronic devices that store data and it is very vital that only the right people have access to this information. But the four majors that I would like to focus on are: Computer Science, Engineering, Business and Information Systems and Technology.

Every major I choose will connect with and deal with cybersecurity concepts and challenges. Some of these majors incorporate computers, software, hardware, and even a cybersecurity ethical standpoint. Computer science is a broad field that involves the study of computers and computing. It is widespread because it emphasizes the importance of putting preventative measures in place to improve cyber security. Secondly, Engineering is another major that is highly connected to cyber. The purpose of an engineering major is to teach students how to develop and improve software while also integrating hardware and software systems to meet requirements. Whether it be software, hardware integration that specializes in the prevention of cyberattacks, or software development that uses multi-factor authentication, the crossover into cybersecurity can be found anywhere.

Thirdly, Businesses are at high risk of cyber attacks. The goal of business majors is to be successful in the modern marketplace. Part of being successful in the modern marketplace is knowing how to prevent cyber attacks and implementing security measures. As an example, client authentication is a common usage of cyber security in e-commerce. If proper security layers are not implemented, cyber risks and vulnerabilities may develop.

Lastly, Information Systems and Technology connects to cybersecurity by its name and while reinforcing networks and websites that operate without interruption.

Together all these four majors are offered at the ODU institution and they all go along with cybersecurity as stated. Nearly everything has some connection to cyber, whether it being dealing with cybercrimes or safeguarding your own personal computer.
