Advertising is a double edged sword. If too risque then the ad might not make the magazine or newspaper, if too bland, no one will want to look at it. It seems that different societies have different ways of looking at sexuality and what can be labeled as too sexy. The gender divide is very noticeable and it makes a difference on how items can be sold to either. In this exercise, it was noticed that the way things are advertised allows them to have a different appeal to people. It seems that there is a way to market certain items and a way to appeal to the masses. There is a psychological component on how to get people to buy merchandise. If I ever go into merchandising, I will make sure that my marketing team knows the psychology behind sales.

I learned that I want to travel abroad and have a great time studying and learning while I do it. Maggie Lindrooth has provided me something that I want to put on my bucket list and check off. I really appreciated reading about someone else’s experiences and looking forward to building my own. I wanted to travel abroad this fall but I did not have the funds available. There is so much to learn about other cultures and different people. The world is always influenced by other people and why should I be one of the people who influence it.

For assignment two, it was interesting to see that Americans believe that all Americans are equal. It really sounds good in theory and looks great on paper, however, in reality Americans are not equal and not treated as such. Realizing the struggles that immigrants, people of color and Native Americans have had to go through just to get a little of the same footing as “Americans” it is hard to say that life struggles are equal in America. At one point in time, even though an African-American man was a man, he was only considered as 3/5ths of a person and was property. How can any human being that is supposed to be equal to another human being be considered as less than a complete person.
Through the years it has gotten a smidge better, but not by much. If people could care about humans as much as they care about animals, we might be in a much better place in the world. Right now, we have to live in the world that we have and not the one that we wish for and still be the change we want to see in the world and make it happen.

This assignment made me realize that I am a lot more tolerant than others to different cultures. I know a lot about them thanks to my mother and the school that I was in from the third to the fifth grade. I appreciate the fact that I got to meet so many people without having to leave the country. I also was introduced to a lot of food. My mother drug me to a lot of her international student functions and I miss the student potlucks and the pretty clothes. I do miss my friends from school. I made it almost around the world without having to have a passport. I am grateful for all of the knowledge acquired about other people and cultures because it taught me a lot on how not to stereotype people and how to learn acceptance of other people.
