Module 10 Journal Entry 1

Nicole Enesse’s video “What does a Cybersecurity Analyst Do? Salaries, Skills & Job Outlook” explains what to expect when choosing this career path. However, when Nicole describes what a cybersecurity analyst does, social themes emerge during her explanation. These themes are social behaviors typically expected in cybersecurity jobs. Here are three of the themes I identified in the video.

The first social theme is Communication. As Nicole mentions, a lot of paperwork is involved, depending on your entry level. You might also be guiding and training your peers and providing data to your boss. Not everyone will be as tech-savvy as you, so developing your communication skills is important. You have to convey and simplify technical terms in a way that is easy to understand for someone outside of the field.

The second social theme is Civic Duty. Nicole points out that you can work abroad or locally in cybersecurity since the field is broad. Whether you work for a small local business or a government agency, it’s crucial to stay professional and respect the organization’s privacy. This is why civic duty matters.

The last but most important skill I learned from the video is Continued Learning. This applies to any field but is especially vital in technology. You need to keep learning, stay updated with new tech, research new frameworks, programs, or hacking techniques, and always be willing to improve. Striving to do your best is a core component in cybersecurity, and by utilizing these three social behaviors, a cybersecurity major can make it far within their career.
