SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Prior to Spanish 101 I have had very limited experience with Spanish or its culture. The experience that I have had has been throughout the two years that I took Spanish in high school and the experience that I have obtain through having very few Spanish-speaking friends. I was not very familiar with the culture or cultural norms.

In my lifetime I have gone to cities such as Florida and California also New York. Door my travels to the cities I was able to meet a few Spanish-speaking individuals however I did not feel comfortable using any of the knowledge that I have to interact with such individuals.

Exploring Culture

Through this class I was able to learn about different aspects of the Spanish culture not only through using the application line grow but also during class when we would have open discussion to discuss different cultural aspects. Initially I was very intimidated to open up about my experience with Spanish speech and culture however my classmates through our projects offered us a space to discuss what we thought about Spanish culture. What I learned most importantly was to not stereotype but to do research on Spanish-speaking individuals if not sure. Learning about the family aspect in Spanish speaking culture taught me that Family is extremely important. I also learned that celebrating in this culture is very important through different festivities that take place

Engaging in Communities

I have valued what I have learned during this class it is import to me because as our world grows closer I can use such skills to engage with other inside and outside my community even if their is a language barrier. In this class I work with another student on a project this gave me the opportunity to share my thoughts with someone who was different from me

Interpersonal Communication

Throughout this class I had to do things outside of my comfort zone that help me develop my communication skills. Working one on one with the professor during my verbal evaluation was extremely nerve-racking however I have more confidence and using Spanish outside of working only with my peers. I believe that the skill sets that I have a team by doing things that I normally would not do well help me in my future goals. In the future I will try to keep my nervousness down and be more comfortable in speaking.

Presentational Speaking

In this class I was required to use multiple systems to inclued lingero. In this program I had to view others work and recording as well as present my own work. This was challenging. I had to speak with confidence with the knowledge of knowing others would see my work. Also speaking in front of other was challenging. In the future I would like to be more confident.

Presentational Writing

Writing in a different language is challenging for me. I have difficulties with written expression in English. Writing in another language is also very tough even more than my own language. I will need to continue to practice. Its hard because Im graded even when practicing.

Interpretive Listening

During this course I had to review and critique others. I believe is was challenging because this language is new to most of us. I worked hard to try to pick up on q’s that word help me understand better and to ask questions.

Interpretive Reading

Learning to read in another language also is very challenging and takes practice. I had to use resources to help me at times. The beauty of today is that we have technology to help fill in the gaps. I did become stronger in reading Spanish however I have a long way to go.
