I chose to interview Tawnette Konkler; a licensed practical nurse that currently works in the student health office at Old Dominion University. Konkler has a nursing degree and went to school in California.
Someone that inspired Konkler to get into the health field was her mother. Her mom gave her the motivation to get into the field that she loves. To become a licensed practical nurse, Konkler went to high school and completed two years of being a certified nursing assistant. The basic roles and responsibilities she has are immunizations, treating illnesses, and allergy injections. Her favorite aspect of her job is to educate students on different things like taking the tuberculosis skin test.
The most surprising aspect of her career is realizing people are reckless when it comes to their health. An example she gave was after she has told patients not to eat certain foods, they end up eating them anyway. The most challenging aspect of her career was when she used to work in the emergency room and take care of multiple people at the same time. A piece of advice she would give to someone getting into the health field is to study hard, rest, and prevent taking breaks. An example of not taking breaks is not continuing your education when you’ve begun.
