Exploring Culture

Looking back on my time in general taking the many levels of college level Spanish courses, all have excited me but also left me pondering on what obstacles I might come across while doing so; “Is this going to be as easy as the previous levels of Spanish? Or will it be harder to point where I’ll struggle and fail the course?” I hope to someday become a Spanish teacher to help others learn the Spanish language. Granted, even after completing both beginning Spanish 101 & 102 alongside Intermediate Spanish 201 & 202 I was able to gain more than just a decent amount of Spanish under my belt, even after finishing this course; sure it became seriously challenging but it pushed me to keep going and learn other languages! I knew that I had a lot to learn in order to understand the Spanish language and culture, it excited me to the point I was eager to learn new vocabulary, phrases, and to boost my confidence when it comes to speaking said language to others. However, there were times where I struggled with Spanish assignments. It’s honestly true of what they say about doing anything in general; whether trying something new or gaining an experience, it’s not going to be easy and that’s what makes it a challenge. And even with those times where I felt giving up and quitting altogether, I continued to push through and kept trying. For me, that helped with understanding cultural perspectives was completing assignments in VHL and just taking the course in general. Yes, the website/textbook was there to help keep tabs on our Spanish skills but there would also be times where it talks about people from different Spanish speaking countries, explaining how things are in their country. For example, in our first lesson “Viaje a Marte” talks about a boy named Antonio with a dream to go to Mars in a rocket. It amazes me how even in a different language you can express your dreams, wants, and needs just like in English.

La Revista; Viaje a Marte.

  1. Relata algún acontecimiento que tuvo lugar cuando eras pequeño y que cambio tu vida: cuántos años tenías?, ¿dónde y con quién estabas? ¿qué tipo de acontecimiento fue? ¿cuándo y dónde ocurrió?, ¿quiénes eran los protagonistas? ¿cómo supieron la noticia? Cuando obtuvo mi primer teléfono inteligente. Era muy feliz.
  2. Resumen del cortometraje “Un viaje a Marte” Es sobre de un niño con mucha imaginación y que sueña con ir a Marte en un cohete. Antonio estaba viendo la tele sobre ciencia ficción y estaba emocionado. Le dijo a su abuelo que quiere ir a Marte. su abuelo le dijo que puede llevarlo en su camioneta. Cuando ellos llegaron a Marte Vieron una tienda con una mujer. ella dijo bienvenida y antonio quería que su abuelo le comprara un recuerdo. Más tarde en la escuela les cuenta a todos que cuando era niño fue a Marte. 
  3. El paisaje del cortometraje les recuerda algún lugar de su región o país, ¿cuál y por qué? marte o el desierto al que fueron Antonio y su abuelo cuando él era niño. Me recuerda al Carolina de Norte porque del suelo rojo de Carolina del Norte. 
  4. ¿Hay algún paisaje en tu región o país que proyecte un aire de ciencia ficción? NASA, El gran cañón, Tejas.
  5. ¿Qué diferencias existen entre el paisaje del video: El Valle de la Luna, argentino y algún paisaje de Estados Unidos? Están en diferentes lugares del mundo con diferentes características y cosas. 
  6. ¿Es posible la vida en otro planeta? ¿Por qué? sí o no. Argumenta tu respuesta. No creo que es posible la vida en otro planeta porque tú nescitas aire, comida y agua para vivir.
  7. Los juguetes son positivos o negativos. Argumenta tu respuesta (3 argumentos de cada uno.  

Interpersonal Communication

It’s hard to believe that this semester marks the 8th time I’ve used TalkAbroad. It’s honestly like a zoom meeting but meeting and connecting with a variety of people from different Spanish speaking countries. During my freshman year, I’ve never heard of TalkAbroad until continuing my path in Spanish. But now after using it, again this year, for this and the previous semesters, I was able to fully flourish and meet very nice people, granted you’ll have to schedule an appointment ahead of time to do so but other than that it’s pretty straight forward with every step. Even though it was my fifth time using TalkAbroad, I was nervous about my first meeting. Granted, within the first few minutes, I did fine but as the meeting progressed and questions were being asked, I kept trembling over my words and felt lost and disappointed in myself. With that being said, I was determined to do better with my next meeting and that I did. It’s true what they say about practice makes perfect, I took my time and practiced my Spanish anytime I could get and even wrote a practice script of what I would say before so. And the more I studied and practiced, the more I felt ready and sure of myself. With that being said, what helps me excel in Spanish is being prepared ahead of time instead of at the very last minute. The first time, I was a rambling mess and the second time I was a lot more prepared and did better.

Presentational Speaking

Over the course of time with taking Spanish is that practice, patience, dedication, and confidence are all essential especially when it comes to speaking. For me, I always had the fear that if I were to be in a situation that required me to speak Spanish, that I would mess up and say the wrong things. With that being said, I had to keep in mind that it’s okay if you make a mistake as long as you keep trying and that you’re not going to know or get everything right on the first try, if you do then that’s good. What challenged me was keeping in mind that there’s a difference between writing and speaking, yes with both you’re showing what you learned and how well you perform in said unit or topic. For me, writing and speaking has its moments depending on what’s being asked, written wise; I’m able to really look back and check for any errors to prevent future miscommunications while as for speaking, it happens right in the moment, it’s all on you to keep up. But the good thing of it all is that communication is key otherwise, how else are others going to know how or figure out the best way to help you. For this speaking piece in class we would do Tertulias based on what we’ve done for homework or what we’re reading in the textbook and the teacher would ask us a question and we would then respond in Spanish.

Down below I’m putting one of my Tertulia assignments;

Tertulia 5; Los Misterios del Amor

  1. ¿Qué es el amor? El amor es un fuerte sentimiento de afecto. Yo describo el amor con amor romántico; novio y novia, matrimonio. No amor romántico con familia y amigos.  

2. ¿Por qué nos enamoramos? Nos enamoramos porque sentimos una fuerte atracción por otra persona. 

3. ¿Cómo se pasa del amor al enamoramiento? Siempre puedes decirle te amo a tu familia pero enamorarse es diferente, hay sentimientos románticos. 

4. ¿Qué importancia tiene la atracción fisica en el enamoramiento? En mi opinión no me importa la atracción física prefiero la personalidad.

5. ¿Qué factores intervienen en la experiencia amorosa? Un atracción romántica por esa persona y la personalidad.

6. ¿Es posible enamorarse por Internet? No creo que sea posible porque no se conocen. Prefiero cara a cara.

7. ¿Es posible encontrar el amor en un programa de televisión? No, eso es loco; Necesitas conectarte con otras personas en el mundo. 

8. El amor a primera vista ¿Es un mito? En mi opinión depende de la persona y de lo que sientes por la persona. 

9. ¿Creen que existe una media naranja para cada uno de nosotros? Estoy de acuerdo con esto porque siempre hay una persona especial para todos. 

Presentational Writing

For this writing piece, I’m putting down below one of my written homework assignments; Reality or Fantasy. I can honestly say without a shout of doubt writing down any new phrases/vocabulary has and will always keep me on top of my Spanish; memory wise. And I hope it’ll apply for when I continue my path of learning other languages.
La tarea; Realidad o Fantasía

  1. ¿Qué historias de Angeles, fantasmas, o extraterrestres conoces? Dios, Casper, y Señorita Marciana. ¿Crees en esas historias? Si porque creo en dios y cuando era niña veía Casper y Señorita Marciana.
  2. ¿Crees que nuestro destino esta predeterminado o podemos modificarlo? No porque creo que depende de lo que quieras hacer en la vida. 
  3. ¿Es bueno promover la imaginación de los niños? Por qué? Creo que es bueno promover la imaginación de los niños porque se sentirá muy felices. 

Parte B; Vocabulario; a. Escribe 5 oraciones usando el vocabulario del corto y el vocabulario del y 4 oraciones usando las expresiones. (No repitas las palabras usadas en el modelo.) 

Mis ejemplos son; 

  1. El monstruo; El monstruo era grande y verde.
  2. La garra; El también tiene grandes garras.
  3. El cohete; Antonio quiere ir a Marte en un cohete.
  4. La camioneta; La camioneta de Antonio es roja.
  5. El hito; El matrimonio es un hito importante en la vida.
  6. Que humor; ¡Qué humor! El estaba enojado.
  7. Ya están por llegar; El hombre de la televisión dijo que ya están por llegar.
  8.  Es un poco a trasmano; La tienda esta en otra ciudad y es un poco a trasmano.
  9.  Los autos se siguen quedando; Antonio no puede ver el despegue si los autos se siguen quedando.

Pretendan que son habitantes de Marte y desean hacer un viaje a la tierra. Usen el vocabulario y algunas expresiones para describir su primer viaje a la Tierra.

¡Una mañana estaba tan emocionada porque hoy es mi primer viaje a la Tierra! Mi suena es viajar y explorar otros planetas del universo. Más tarde en el día nos preparamos para el viaje. ¡Pronto el despegue del cohete fue muy apasionante! Cuando tuve en la tierra era hermosa; el cielo y el agua eran azules y las muchas plantas eran de diferentes colores. También había diferentes cosas llamadas animales, ¡Una cosa llamada perro era muy amigable! 

Interpretive Listening

I feel like with any language whether it be in Spanish, French, German, Italian, or whatever the case maybe you’re pretty much guessing what that other person is either saying, feeling, or thinking. Throughout the course, there would be times where we had to listen to what the speaker would say based on their tone and mood you could get an idea of what they’re saying, same thing applied for class interviews with the instructor, what I always kept in mind was paying attention to the following; tone of voice, body language, and just listening in general especially if a question is being asked.

I feel like what was challenging was overcoming the fear of saying something wrong or just getting embarrassed. But after experiencing it a couple of times, I’m not as anxious as I was. In fact, I feel a lot more confident and sure of myself.

Interpretive Reading

I truly stand by this description, with that being said I feel like this is what helped me to push myself and excel in learning Spanish. While learning any language is a thrilling experience, keep in mind that practice, patience, dedication, and confidence are all essential whether reading, writing, or speaking. The thought of reading in Spanish sounded extremely difficult versus reading in English, the same as if it were a song or anything else that was in a different language. But after taking Spanish for as long as I have and continue to do, I’ve grown to like reading in Spanish, it kind of reminds me of a puzzle when reading something new like “Can I guess what this means?” I can honestly say what helps me improve on reading in Spanish, is practice by reading aloud the words to the best of my ability. Granted, over the course of time, I’ve struggled with reading in Spanish from time to time but what really helps is hearing how the words are properly pronounced and practicing saying them. You’re not going to know or get everything right the first time but as long as you give it your all and keep trying, you’ll be just fine.
