The unique attributes of cyberspace include anonymity, global reach, and rapid dissemination. These can all hinder traditional law enforcement from using certain investigative strategies normally used. The use of VPN’s can hinder law enforcement from investigating cybercrimes. Their locations would be hard, if not impossible, to identify. Technology keeps us connected with anyone from anywhere in the world. These days, it takes two seconds to reach someone in a different country, and this makes it harder to catch criminals who scam people.
I believe there is an academic gap because technology and cybercrime have increased at a quick rate, and the studies have not quite adjusted to that. Right now, criminal justice has a focus on social and behavioral aspects and technology has not been implemented. Cyber Surveillance Law and Governance would help bridge this gap by adding technology as a focus. The teachings could focus on cybersecurity but also teach what’s illegal and how it can be enforced.
In my opinion, “cyber units” should be created. I feel that having specialized units would be beneficial because the focus would be specifically on cyber crimes. We shouldn’t increase a patrol cop’s workload because then that would take some of the focus off of traditional crimes which could lead to an increase. It would be more effective if each unit has their own specific responsibilities. I also feel as though it would be a lot to have to retrain everyone to handle digital evidence. It would make more sense to bring in people who already have the expertise in dealing with technology.
