COMM Reflection Blog

Doing the ePortfolio this semester ended up being way more useful than I thought. One of the biggest ways I improved my professional presence was by learning how to present my work clearly and confidently. Before this class, I didn’t even think about how important it is to make your assignments not just correct but also organized, easy to read, and professional. The eP made me think about my audience, formatting, and how my ideas flow. It also made me pay more attention to grammar, transitions, and making my writing sound polished. I feel like this class really helped me practice skills I can actually use in the real world, like when I’m writing reports or communicating clearly on the job as a firefighter.

What I liked most about my eP was that it gave me a space to show my growth. I could include different projects and reflections that really show what I’ve learned throughout the semester, and add on to work that I had previously posted. Looking back at my first assignments compared to my later ones was kind of satisfying because I could see how much I improved. I also liked the creative part, like picking visuals, formatting, and figuring out how to make my eP look good online. It made the eP feel like something I could actually be proud of, I enjoy looking back and seeing how far I have come

The hardest part was definitely writing the reflections. It was tempting to just summarize the assignments, but we had to explain why they mattered and what we learned. I had to figure out how to write something meaningful without repeating myself. That was tricky at first, but pushing through made my eP stronger in the end.

If I were giving advice to future students, I’d say start early and take it seriously. Keep notes about what you learned in each project, think about how your work shows growth, and make it look clean and organized. A well presented eP not only helps your grade but also shows your professional side.

The part of this course I found most interesting was the Popular Press Analysis. I liked breaking down real-world media and connecting it to communication concepts. It was cool to see how ideas we learn in class show up in articles, social media, and everyday life. It made me think more critically about the media I consume and helped me understand how communication works in the real world something that’s really important when I want to be a firefighter, where clear communication can literally save lives.

From both the Short Film Analysis and the Popular Press Analysis, I learned how important it is to really pay attention to details and back up ideas with evidence. The Short Film Analysis showed me how everything, camera angles, music, editing affects how people interpret a story. The Popular Press Analysis taught me the value of credible sources and connecting examples to bigger ideas. Both projects strengthened my analytical skills and my ability to explain my thoughts clearly, which is something I know will help me in any career, especially in a fast-paced, high-stakes field like firefighting.

I think this course is super helpful for my future career. Being a firefighter isn’t just about putting out fires; it’s about communicating clearly, staying organized, and working as part of a team. The skills I learned in this class writing clearly, analyzing messages, presenting ideas professionally, are all things I’ll need on the job. Whether it’s writing incident reports, giving instructions during an emergency, or explaining safety procedures to the public, this course taught me skills that I’ll actually use in real life.

Overall, the ePortfolio was challenging but totally worth it. It let me reflect on my growth, showcase my work, and practice skills I’ll use in school and my future career. It made me more confident in my communication abilities and reminded me how important it is to present myself professionally. I’m glad I put the work into it because it really shows what I’m capable of and how much I’ve grown this semester.
