I am Raekwon Jackson, and I am majoring in Cybersecurity. Cybersecurity is an extremely broad field that will continue to expand and grow as society dependency on technology continues to increase. Most jobs of today involve technology whether it be just a register, or a personal computer. One thing is certain for our technological future, the more services that begin to be ran through cyber networks, the more Cybersecurity will be prioritized. Hackers are consistently developing more ways to achieve their objectives through cyber tactics, and it would seem they will never rest. With the career path I have chosen I will likely be utilizing all different varieties of cybersecurity tools to accomplish my tasks. Therefore, I will likely be forced to learn in rather elaborative detail how to use the equipment and what they do in addition to the software, Operating systems, and physical hardware I’ll be running across. There are a lot of different majors that tie into cybersecurity however I’ll be naming four that are taught at Old Dominion University (ODU) to elaborate just how important Cybersecurity is becoming not just locally of course but around the world. Firstly, a major that almost directly ties into Cybersecurity would be Computer Science. Computer Science essentially is the study of computers inside and out; however, it is way more complex than what is revealed on just the led screen of our everyday devices. It combines a great deal of mathematics, engineering, and of course a ton of programming. Naturally it takes several measures of Cybersecurity to keep user data and other vital components of computers from being compromised internally and externally. The second major I feel is very important to the entire concept of cybersecurity would be Criminology (the study of crime). Cybercrime has become and will likely continue to be a massive issue for organizations and crime fighters to deal with. Needless to say hacking someone else’s network is illegal and while one of the sole purposes of Cybersecurity is to prevent this from happening studying the root of the issue and how and why hackers do what they do is great way to enable organizations to defend themselves. Finance majors eventually will rely heavily on cybersecurity whether they know it or not. One of the key reasons some hackers do what they do is for financial gain, so naturally where the money is will be a hot spot for the wrong attention. A strong cyber defense however can deter some of these threats. Finally, Computer Engineering, which is closely related to computer science, is another major offered by ODU that involves the input of key hardware and/or software components for computers. The major is still heavily programming intensive.
