Mid-Semester Reflection

Learning style

  • My learning style from the “How we Learn and why we don’t” says that I am a Sensor Feeler (SF) learner.  After learning that I am a sensor feeler learner I tried adding new things into my study habit, like calling my mother or father and giving them a brief overview of what I learned. I found that this study trick has helped me to better learn and understand the information that was being taught during the lecture. This new study habit has worked better for me than just going over the notes and try understand and retain the information, using the habit It has made learn the material quicker.

Study habits

  • Depending on how much I must study determines where I study sometimes I study in my room, the TLC, or go to the library. I have found that when I study in my room its not as effective as supposed to going to the TLC or Library. When studying in my room I get distracted easily by going to sleep, or watching TV. Going to the TLC or Library is the quietest place form me to study and not get distracted and stay focused. For me personally I try to study during the day when I get out of classes, during the day is when I have the most energy to get all my studying out of the way with out feeling tired. I would say my studying is effective I retain the information that I am studying, I would improve my studying by turning my phone off so that I could stay focused while studying.

Transition to college

  • For me personally college is not at all what I expected to be. I feel like I came in with the wrong mindset about meeting new people and being on my own. I think if I would have come in with an open mindset about every aspect of college my transition here would have been a lot better than how its going. Academically I was not expecting college to be so much work, like I expected a lot of work, but not this much work. Living on campus have probably been my toughest transition, I’m not use to having to share a room or bathroom with anyone. I think the easiest challenge to overcome would be being homesick or adapting to being on your own.

Connecting to campus

  • My major challenge this semester is taking chemistry. I have been to the PASS/SI sessions that is held by other students that have previously taken the class. The free tutoring session that ODU offer is something that I would like to learn more about. I would like to know if the tutoring sessions are held by professors or other students. I would also like to know when the sessions are held to see if they fit into my schedule or not. Yes, I have a friend that have helped me this semester, they have given me motivation to continue to go through when I felt that college was too much form me and wanted to give up. I have attended may interest meeting for organizations, but I decided not to join yet because I wanted to get use to college and learn how to balance my school work before getting involved with an organization.
