This course looked at the relationships between race, ethnicity, crime, and the criminal justice system. By reading stories and doing discussions, I learned how structural inequalities shape experiences of crime and justice, particularly for minorities. The course talked about intersectionality, showing how race and ethnicity interact with social and political influence change outcomes in the criminal justice system.
In this class, I worked with key theoretical frameworks that explain disparities in policing, sentencing, incarceration, and access to good lawyers. I also looked at controversial justice issues, like systemic racism, and racial profiling. By looking at current policies and suggesting changes, it helped me understand how criminal and social justice systems impact minorities and how evidence based policy recommendations can promote equality, accountability, and good change. This course helped my critical thinking skills and reinforced the importance of justice oriented approaches in addressing inequality within the legal system.
