Introduction

Throughout my time at Old Dominion University, I have gained a lot of professional skills and technical skills that have prepared me for a career in cybersecurity. My coursework has not only helped with my technical understanding of cybersecurity and cyber security threats, but it also helped me build useful skills like leadership, writing, and innovative thinking. These skills were developed through interdisciplinary learning through classes that combined technology, policy, business thinking, and communication.

Three of the most significant skills I developed during my time at Old Dominion University are technical cybersecurity, professional communication and writing, and entrepreneurial problem solving. All of these skills was strengthened through specific courses and assignments that required me to apply knowledge from different disciplines. My artifacts demonstrate how these skills were developed through real coursework and projects, and how they contribute to my readiness for a professional career in cybersecurity. These experiences helped me understand how technical knowledge, communication abilities, and innovative thinking must work together to address complex cybersecurity challenges in modern organizations.

Technical Cybersecurity Expertise
Artifact: CompTIA Security+ Certification (CPD 395)

One of the most important skills I have learned during my program is technical cybersecurity knowledge. The best artifact to demonstrate this skill is my CompTIA Security+ certification, which I received after completing a course called CPD 395. The main objective of this course was to prepare students to take the Security+ exam, and it covered some of the key cybersecurity topics, including risk management, threat detection, network security, cryptography, identity and access management, and incident response.
While preparing for this certification exam, I have learned how to analyze different cybersecurity threats and how businesses secure their systems against these threats. While preparing for this exam, I have also learned how to apply discipline, critical thinking, and theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. I also needed to learn how different security controls work and how they are applied to prevent different cybersecurity threats. While preparing for this exam, I have also learned how to improve my problem-solving skills and gain a better understanding of cybersecurity.

This course also required me to use the knowledge gained from other technical courses that I took in my other classes at Old Dominion University. Knowing concepts like networking, operating systems, and risk management enabled me to understand the broader context of the cybersecurity measures provided. Thus, the knowledge gained from different sources enabled me to understand the working of different technologies and security measures to protect the organization from cyber attacks.
Having this kind of technical knowledge is important for my profession because many job requirements for cybersecurity positions require certifications like Security+. Many employers require individuals with this kind of knowledge to work in the cybersecurity field because they require individuals who have the basic knowledge of security and who are able to apply it to real-world scenarios. Thus, having this certification not only proves my knowledge, but it also proves my dedication to my profession and my willingness to keep learning and staying updated with the latest developments in the field.

Professional Communication and Writing
Artifact: Cybersecurity Policy Analysis Paper (CYSE 425W)

Another skill that I developed during my stay at Old Dominion University was professional communication, especially when writing. My artifact that shows my skill is my cybersecurity policy analysis paper that I completed during my stay in CYSE 425W: Cyber Strategy and Policy.
This course was based on the creation of cybersecurity policies, planning of strategies, and the relationship between cybersecurity and businesses. The major challenge that I encountered during my stay in this course was how to communicate my understanding of cybersecurity policies and their strategies through writing. This course was different from the others because, instead of focusing on how to create cybersecurity systems, I had to analyze policy decisions and their impacts on businesses.
While writing my policy analysis paper, I had to write with utmost care because I had to base my arguments on evidence and communicate my analysis clearly to the readers. I had to consider the social, political, and ethical implications of cybersecurity policies. This required me to think critically and to analyze problems from different perspectives.

In comparison to the other courses, “like my general education writing courses and IDS 300W,” this course helped me prepare for this assignment because it taught me how to properly structure arguments and do research.
Being a good writer is extremely important in a field like cybersecurity. As a cybersecurity professional, I will always be required to write reports, risk assessments, security policies, and documentation, both technical and non-technical in nature. Many job postings discuss how communication skills are a must in a cybersecurity field because, as a security professional, I will have to convey risks and recommendations to managers, executives, and others who are not technically inclined. This course helped me improve my communication skills in a field like cybersecurity.

Entrepreneurial Problem-Solving
Artifact: Cybersecurity Innovation Project (CYSE 494)

The third major skill that I developed during my program is entrepreneurial problem-solving. This skill was developed through CYSE 494: Entrepreneurship in Cybersecurity, which provided students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge of cybersecurity in innovative ways to solve problems.
The artifact associated with the skill that I developed is a project that involved exploring how cybersecurity knowledge can be used to create some new and unique. This course was based on innovation, problem identification, and the creation of solutions to problems. Instead of focusing on the identification of technical concepts, the course provided students with the opportunity to explore how cybersecurity can be used to solve problems in different contexts.
While working on my project, I had to analyze a problem that exists in the world and think about how a solution can be developed and implemented to solve the problem. This required a lot of thinking and planning while evaluating the feasibility of the idea that I had to create a solution to the problem that I had identified. In addition, I had to think about how cybersecurity solutions can create value to the world.
This particular course has allowed me to think about cybersecurity from a broader perspective. While this field can be viewed as a technical field of study, this particular course has allowed me to think about how innovation and entrepreneurship can be used to improve the practice of cybersecurity. By applying the concepts that I have learned in this particular course, I have been able to understand how technical concepts can be combined with business concepts.
Thinking as an entrepreneur is a key skill that must be used in the cybersecurity field. This is because every business will always have a new threat to worry about. This means that cybersecurity experts must be able to think of innovative solutions to the problems that they face. Many businesses are looking for experts in cybersecurity who can think creatively and offer new ideas to improve the current cybersecurity systems. This particular course has allowed me to think in this way.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my academic experiences at Old Dominion University have enabled me to develop a lot of different sets of skills that are important for my future profession as a cybersecurity expert. Some of the skills developed during my academic period include my technical skills, my ability to communicate professionally, and my entrepreneurial problem-solving skills.
My learning experience through the interdisciplinary approach has greatly impacted my academic and professional growth as a student and a future professional. My choice of a profession, cybersecurity, involves learning and applying knowledge from a lot of different areas, including technology, policy, communication, and business strategy, among others. My learning experience through the different perspectives on cybersecurity has enabled me to have a more comprehensive and complete knowledge of the subject.
My learning experience through the course IDS 300W has enabled me to prepare well for the interdisciplinary approach to learning and problem-solving, as the course has enabled me to learn and understand the ability to analyze problems from multiple perspectives and to integrate knowledge from different fields.

Being an interdisciplinary thinker is essential in the field of cybersecurity because there is a lot at stake, especially for the different aspects of society such as businesses, governments, and the general population. My coursework has assisted me in the development of the skills required to address a problem in the appropriate manner, communicate effectively, and apply innovative ideas to address cybersecurity issues.
As I advance in my professional journey, the skills acquired during my academic journey will continue to play a critical role in my professional development. My experiences have assisted me in preparing myself to not only understand the different aspects of cybersecurity but also communicate my ideas, think strategically, and contribute to the development of impactful ideas in the cybersecurity field.
