Mid Semester Reflection

For my reflection, the class I am exceeding in would be calculus since I have always enjoyed math above the other courses. I am also doing well in Sociology because the workload is manageable and not overbearing. History is relatively easy, but the work provided is overwhelming and time-consuming compared to all the other classes. The class is more self-taught rather than the professor explaining the material that’s required for us to learn. The only classes where I would require assistance would be my chemistry and lab courses. The information provided to us in chemistry would not match the material we would be tested on during our exams, but in response to that, my peers and I would come together and test each other to make sure we understood the information. The only other class where I would require assistance would be the chemistry lab class because the professor is responsible for guiding the students throughout the experiments and would make mistakes himself. Majority of the time me and my lab partners would have to figure out the majority of the experiment on our own. To ensure that I would understand the class and get assistance would be to attend the professor’s office hours to have a one-on-one talk to ensure I would understand the experiment.

After being admitted into ODU, I never had many expectations because I would not have wanted to expect one outcome and receive a different result and have mixed emotions about college. My only significant expectation was the workload portrayed in front of me. What I predicted came to pass with receiving a copious amount of work to complete. The primary thing that surprised me this semester was my freedom and being a grown adult on my own. One thing that was not expected from my college experience would be to socialize with many different groups of people. Since I live on campus, my most formidable challenge to accomplish was being away from my family and friends and trying to adjust to the lifestyle that I was already accustomed to. My most simplistic challenge to overcome was making new friends that were in similar fields of study just like me.

Something that I have learned from the public health major is that it is a more community-based major compared to others. Another thing I found out was that public health is a collection of sciences that can branch off to other fields of sciences, and I would be able to only take the required classes instead of wasting my time with unnecessary courses. My thoughts and ideas for the public health major have remained the same, and I still want to pursue this major to the best of my ability. After learning the criteria, the only extra thought I have is that I am more motivated to pursue this major. If there were any other major that I would like to follow up on, it would be physical therapy because I have always enjoyed sports and my main objective would be to help others to return to their original self and continue to follow their talents.

The only major issue I have faced this semester was time management and figuring out the best study habits for upcoming exams and tests. The most effective resource that I have used in preparation was the tutoring centers provided in the library and the chemistry building. My roommate and multiple friends have assisted me in preparing for upcoming challenges that I will face education-wise during this semester. All of them have helped me in ways by either studying together or helping me understand the material. I have not attended an interest meeting for any club, but if I were to do one, it would be the club tennis team. I have decided not to get involved for the moment because I want to put all my priorities toward school and to reassure my grades are at the standard that I require them to be.
