CyberOps Reflection
For the most part I enjoyed the attending the cyber-ops event last Saturday. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the morning half of the event which meant I missed the guest speakers, something that I had been looking forward to. However I was there for a good chunk oh the afternoon and enjoyed doing the Capture The Flag. I ended up competing in the capture the flag solo and if I remember correctly I scored somewhere around 170 points, which isn’t a ton but considering its only my second CTF id say it went pretty well. I also realized during the capture the flag that I could only attempt a limited amount of questions due to many of them having files and other applications that are not accessible on Apple computers, so I may have to look into figuring out how to run a virtual windows on my Apple laptop. I also was able to get lunch at cyber-ops and the food was actually pretty good ( and free ).
Guest Speaker Reflection
Last week we had the chance to have a guest speaker during our CYSE 100 class, our guest speaker was Ruhi Patel, she was part of the first cybersecurity LLC at ODU and one of the first people to go through the cybersecurity program here. I found it very informative having the chance to hear from and ask questions to someone who has already graduated and is currently working in the field of cybersecurity, especially someone who has gone through the same program. I also found it quite interesting to hear about her position at Capital One, if I remember correctly she said that during her first year at Capital One she work in a group that a was focused on insider threats, I found it very interesting that Capital One and other large companies have teams dedicated to this task however it makes total sense. I also noticed how she mentioned that aside from one or two classes she was able to achieve a degree ion cybersecurity while doing relatively little coding or other things on the technical side of things.
