When it comes to Cyber Security, Deviance is defined as “inappropriate or criminal behavior in a digital context.” Workplace deviance is when an employee intentionally causes harm to a company or organization that they are a part of. According to an article written by Jeremiah Talamantes, “people internal to an organization are a frequent cause of data breaches, both through negligence and with ill intentions.” As new technology continues to develop, Opportunities for people to violate their organizations policies have increased significantly. Normally, workplace deviance happens when an employee feels like the company they work for mistreats them or feels as if the company has wronged them. Sometimes, employees will retaliate against the company they work for to punish the company for their wrongdoing. An example of workplace deviance is an employee being fired from the company they work for and selling company information on the darkweb or even giving confidential company information to a competitor simply out of spite. This can result in the company or organization losing money, clients, or it could impact a company so badly that they would unfortunately need to permanently close the business. Oftentimes, employees are the main threat to an organization when it comes to data breaches. Sometimes an employee may not purposely cause a data breach, it could simply be because the employee was being careless and made a mistake that caused a breach. According to Talamantes, Cyber Security threats within organizations continue to be on the rise because of “insufficient data protection strategies and solutions, increasing number of devices with access to sensitive data, and greater complexity of technology.” So, being that new technology continues to be developed, organizations should consider creating more extensive training programs for their employees, make Cyber security a priority, and keep up with changes that happen within the Cyber security industry since things are constantly changing.
