Journal Entry #4

Compare cybersecurity risks in the U.S. and another country.

Each country has different levels and types of cybersecurity risks and threats. The U.S. faces the threat of phishing, hackers, and third-party risks. Phishing is when an attacker disguises themselves as a notable company or person and emails an individual in order to get them to reveal personal information. Many people in the U.S. become a victim of phishing due to the lack of knowledge of cyber risks like this. Hackers are individuals that can gain access to information without permission using specific technology. Unfortunately, hackers come from both within and outside of the United States. These hackers can damage the infrastructure of the U.S. by gaining access to confidential information and spreading it. Third-party risks can occur when a partner company is exposed in a cyber attack, or unknown data collection, and other companies associated may also be at risk. For example, a popular social media platform in the U.S. called TikTok, is considered to be a third-party risk due to its partnership with a company that could potentially be stealing the data of users. The U.S is not the only country that has to face cyber risks like these. In Canada, the main cyber threats are scams, frauds, and ransomware. Ransomware is a form of cyber attack where the attacker blocks access to certain sites or information until a certain amount of money is paid to them. This is due to the fact that cybercriminals in Canada have discovered that these acts result in the most money gained from the country because of how easily people can fall for them. As long as attacks believe they can take advantage of Canadians, then the cybercrime in Canada will only increase. The government needs to focus on strengthening the security and protecting the information of citizens so that cybercriminals can no longer be profiting from their personal information.
