Sport Professional Penpal: Making the Connection

The sports industry is built on relationships, and for this assignment, I didn’t have to look far to find the right connection. Shamar Gray, currently the Football Outreach Coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, was an easy choice—not just because of his impressive career path, but because we go way back. We both attended Salisbury University, took several sports communication courses together, and I had the chance to watch him dominate on the football field. Seeing his hard work pay off firsthand made reaching out to him for this assignment feel like a natural fit.

Shamar’s journey in sports is one that speaks to both talent and persistence. At Salisbury, he made a name for himself as a standout player, earning an Honorable Mention in the 2021 All-Conference selections. But what really stands out about Shamar is his ability to translate his passion for football into a career. Now, in his role with the Baltimore Ravens, he helps strengthen the team’s community outreach efforts, creating programs that connect the organization with fans and aspiring athletes. It’s a perfect example of how sports careers extend far beyond the field.

When it came time to reach out, I sent Shamar a message on LinkedIn explaining the assignment and how I wanted to hear more about his transition from playing football to working in the NFL. He responded quickly, excited to help, which honestly didn’t surprise me—Shamar has always been someone who supports those around him. Having this opportunity to connect with him again, but now on a professional level, is something I’m really looking forward to.

Not only is this assignment giving me the chance to learn more about the industry from someone I genuinely respect, but it’s also a reminder of how valuable the connections we make in college can be. Over the next few months, I can’t wait to dive deeper into his role and get a better understanding of what it takes to succeed in sports communication at the highest level. GO GULLS!
