Cybersecurity is important in any field or occupation that requires the use of a computer or other device. Cybersecurity helps with the protection of servers, firewalls, and data. Even though in the past, it was not as necessary in running secure businesses and keeping the integrity of data and information, now it is an extremely important tool/skill to have in order to do these things. It can be applied to marine biology in many ways. One of which includes the collection of important data in database networks. As in many other fields of study, the security of the information kept in these databases is vital in keeping the integrity of each study and of new findings. Another way in which cybersecurity plays a major role in marine biology is through tracking devices and apps used to carry out many of the studies. For example, tracking the path and lives of endangered species such as sharks helps biologists to learn about their lifestyles and publicize the data they find so that they can be better equipped to help and protect these animals. One way they do this is through tracking devices attached to the sharks which are then connected to the computers that decipher the data and lay it out nicely so that it can be interpreted by the scientists. Devices like these (ones that cannot be used on their own to decipher data) are called internet of things devices. Other examples of these include certain cameras and thermostats used when studying marine life. These types of devices need to be connected to another computer in order to view the data they collect. This does not mean, however, that they are not able to be hacked and controlled from another location or by malicious people. Therefore, cybersecurity is necessary to secure data like this so that it can continue to be used to in the efforts to conserve our marine wildlife.
