E-Portfolio #2

Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes having to do with living organisms. Biochemistry is a sub-discipline of both chemistry and biology and therefore, it can be divided into three fields: structural biology, enzymology, and metabolism. Biochemists plan and conduct complex projects in basic and applied research daily. They also manage laboratory teams, monitor the quality of their work and isolate, analyze, and synthesize proteins, fats, DNA, and other molecules. To do this, they need to use computer systems specific for inputting and analyzing the data they collect. That is where cybersecurity comes in; it is useful in keeping the computer systems they work through safe and secure. Biomedical engineering or medical engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for different healthcare purposes. Biomedical engineers design biomedical devices and equipment and sometimes must adjust or repair that equipment. In this field, the security of patients’ health and personal information is extremely important. Many times, the computers that control the equipment being used is equipped with data about individual patients and therefore must also be equipped with measures of safety through cybersecurity to keep their information private from the outside world. Criminal Justice is the delivery of justice to those who have committed crimes. Its goals include the rehabilitation of offenders, preventing other crimes, and moral support for victims. For example, in jail systems, the data of the offenders residing in the prison are laid out for all to see on their computers. Many times, the information and computers used in these scenarios are not very secure and therefore, they put the information of the inmates and guards at risk. Environmental health is the branch of public health concerned with all aspects of the natural and built environment affecting human health. Environmental health officers are responsible for monitoring and enforcing health and hygiene legislation. They also investigate when there is an incident, such as pollution, a noise problem, toxic contamination, pest infestation or an outbreak of food poisoning. Doing so involves collecting and protecting data in safe computer systems and that can only be done with the use of cybersecurity.
