Cyber technology and advancements made in the field affect us in our day-to-day life. They have made our lives better in many ways but can sometimes cause issues. An example of this is cybercrime. Cybercrime has become a more regular occurrence with the growing number of people using technology every day. Cyber technology has also affected offenders and victims of cybercrime. It has mainly affected the interactions between the two. One of the times in which this occurs is at the beginning of the offense or even before it happens. Many people nowadays post everything about their lives, even the most trivial details. They may see it as keeping in contact with friends and relatives; however, offenders see it as a gateway. They see an opportunity to steal information and cause harm virtually that might eventually even lead to causing harm physically. Before, when there was no Internet, offenders had a smaller range of victims and less insight into their everyday lives. Now, it is much easier for them to gain access to the lives of others. This is harmful because so many people use the Internet every day and are unknowingly putting themselves in harm’s way. By posting constant updates and even their location, offenders have a much easier time finding an easy target. The communication between offenders and victims has also changed. Before, offenders had to know the victim personally or through a mutual friend. Now, they can disguise themselves online as someone whom the victim might know, or even as a friendly stranger. They might be able to entice the victim into releasing sensitive information such as their location, bank account information, or even their social security numbers. It has become so easy for cybercrime to take place, but so hard to find the offender. In the past, the offender just had to leave a fingerprint, and if they were already in the system, they were immediately identified. Now, with hackers and cyber criminals being so skilled, they can cover their tracks completely. Knowing this, we need to ensure that everyone is taking the right precautions and protecting themselves and their personal information when using the internet or any other technology.
