My initial course expectations were that I would find this class challenging and intriguing. I think the most challenging part of this class was not actually this class but balancing all the work from my other classes along with this one. Four of my classes had assignment due on the same day and I did not prepare for that adequately some of the time. In those instances you can see where I missed an assignment due to poor time management or procrastination. I definitely found this class intriguing and maybe the most relevant and interesting of all the classes I took this semester. If I took this class again I would stagger my assignment instead of trying to do everything at once. Turning in a blog post a few days early and such might have helped. One still I gained from this class I think is critical thinking. The assignment provided a way to not just memorize material but really grasp and apply it to real life instances. Although I felt this page was a pain, it did prove to be beneficial. I included the image below because this is essentially what I did on a weekly basis. If I had taken this thought process and applied it to my daily school schedule I might have been more successful.

The article correlated to this week’s blog did not really contain information that shocked me. It seems to be pretty accurate just based off of my experiences and what I’ve heard from other people, especially the part that talks about the 3 stages of conflict during the mating process. This article talked specifically about heterosexual monogamous relationships so it was very narrow and did not include a wide variety of relationships. I would have liked to see more information on relationships that are not as typical.

Ways in which men irritate women-

  • Not listening
  • Conversing to respond and not to gain insight
  • Masking emotions
  • Not communicating

Ways in which women irritate men-

  • “Over communicating”
  • Expressing “too many” emotions
  • Expecting the man to “figure out” why she’s mad

I chose the meme below because it represents the stereotypical external emotional expression men and women daily. Like I listed above, men get irritated with women for their over expression of emotions and women get irritated with men for their lack of emotional expression.

Self-Regulation is a big part of emotional intelligence because it gives you the ability to respond to situations of high emotionality rationally. Part of emotional intelligence is being able to appropriately express your emotions, which is where self-regulation comes in. Emotional intelligence as a whole is adequate expression of emotions, being aware of one’s emotions and controlling one’s emotions. All of these areas have a root in self-regulation. I learned from this topic that our initial emotional reaction to high stress situations triggers the fight-or-flight response and that is why people with low self-regulation might have bursts of emotion. An area I can improve in is expressing my emotions. Often I have no problem identifying and controlling my emotions but expressing them is difficult for me. I either say too much or too little and occasionally have bursts of neuroticism.

I have included a snapshot of a quick EQ test I did. It is interesting that it mentions taking time away from goal setting and planning to relax and unwind. I have found that a source of a lot fo my anxiety is my tendency to want to plan everything, short and long term. When things do not go according to plan or there is a lack of plan, I do not regulate my emotions well.

I am not surprised by the information in the video however, I am surprised at the lack of progress we have made in advertising. Advertising has created a false image of perfection and objectification of women in society. I did have some of an idea of the stereotyping and damaging images in ads but I did not see the severity and commonness until the video. Representations of men and women in ads are damaging to women in the greatest degree. Men being seen as dominant and untouchable without emotion and women as submissive, love obsessed, sex objects are all images that damage a woman’s autonomy and self-image and all are seen regularly in ads.

One thing that sticks out to my about this study and exam time period is that I definitely did not spread the review sheet out adequately during the study week. I should have spent more time on my weaker areas instead of allotting the same amount of time for each topic- an aspect that shows in my grade. I also wish I took advantage of the youtube study videos available. What I can do to improve this process in the future is to actually look over the review sheet before I start studying to see if there are areas I need to study more than others. I chose the meme below because it pretty much describes my attitude when I was going over weaker points and telling myself they did not need more work.

I believe myself to be a pretty confident student as long as I don’t procrastinate past the point of no return. I can easily get overwhelmed if I leave everything to the last minute however, once I start on task I have no lack in confidence in my ability to finish the task- starting is the hardest part for me. My confidence levels directly correlate with my course load. I don’t really have qualms with the things I have the ability to accomplish. I know that if i work hard enough, I can get an A- no matter how hard the class is. In fact I have been known to get As in my hardest classes and lower grades in my easier classes because I enjoy challenges. My biggest setback is not allowing my course load to pile on top of me and staying organized is a way to combat this. The way I can boost my confidence is to maintain a good work ethic and stay on top of my assignments. Instead of pushing my work to the last minute, I need to stick to the schedule I’ve laid out for myself to keep myself ahead of the game.

I scored a 92.5 in “believe in your ability”,  80 in “ability to grow with effort, and 87.7 overall. This is actually slightly lower than I had assumed it would be however I scored a little lower in areas that talked about talent. I do believe that some people are gifted with talents that other people cannot obtain or exceed because they were birth given. However, I do believe that hard work gives one the ability to achieve anything- even if not at the same level as someone with talent AND hard work. I think that directly correlates with what I said about being able to succeed in any of courses if I just put in the work necessary to succeed. An example of what I mean by this, is that a person with superb memory hard work ethic might receive a 100% in the course where I might receive a 96% with my work ethic alone. Both still As, but the person with the better memory earns the higher grade.

The last blog I posted, I added the explanation of why I posted the picture in the “description” part of the picture and did not receive credit for it. I’m assuming this means it needs to be in the body of the blog itself. Anyway, I’ve included a picture of the results of the Self-Efficacy test for self-explanatory reasons.

The course objectives in the syllabus will help me stay on track and make sure I am gaining all of the necessary knowledge and information from the text and powerpoints that will ensure success in the course. If there are objectives on the list that I look at and cannot answer or explain after the topics have already been covered, then I know I need to go back over the material in which those topics were covered. I expect this course to be challenging but intriguing. I have never used a page like this for any of my classes so I am interested in that. I also enjoy the fact that we can add pictures to our assignments. I hope to gain a better understanding of the topic of Social Psychology. I plan to implement good study habits. I am currently taking 5 classes and I’ve never taken a course load this big before. I’m also working two jobs so time management is going to be essential. I have everything written in a planner with due dates and when I should have chapters/modules completed to make sure I do not get behind.
