PSYC317: The application of inferential statistical principles to psychological research problems.
PSYC318W: An examination of research principles and techniques in psychology. Experimental design and interpretation is stressed. Students learn to locate and read technical articles and to report on research projects in the style of the American Psychological Association
For this section, discussing both of my psychological research classes is appropriate as I could not have done one without the other. These two classes have collectively created the foundation in psychological research in order to be successful in graduate school. As my goal is to study more qualitative data, the knowledge that I have obtained from my research methods to generate obtainable concepts to create an appropriate study.
What Experience did I gain from Quantitative Methods (PSYC317) ?
In this class, I learned how one uses statistics in the social sciences and how to determine the null and alternative hypotheses by hand as well as an introduction to SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). We learned to match appropriate alpha levels and tests to each study and observed data.
- I obtained and processed information into SPSS
- Demonstrated proficiency with SPSS and the analysis of data manually and by using SPSS.
- We worked as a class to ensure that we followed the correct method and interpreted our findings correctly in APA format.
What Experience did I gain from Research Methods (PSYC 318W) ?
In this couse, I learned how to conduct a research study and construct an APA formatted research paper that effectively describes the purpose of the study, supporting literature, descriptives of the data and participants, and my discussion of the study.
- I learned to collaborate with others in a group presentation of our findings to our class.
- Demonstrated further proficiency in SPSS by inputing and interpreting data collected from a student distributed survey.
- Translated qualitative data into quantitative data into SPSS using a codebook.
- Demonstrated leadership skills to ensure that the analyses and research reports were completed and submitted in a timely manner to meet deadlines.
Overall, What Skills Did I Obtain During These Experiences That Will Help Me In The Future?
