Article Review #2- Cyberbullying and Psychological Stress among Female Employees

When it comes to being a female in the workplace it seems as if time has come to a standstill. While 50 years ago women couldn’t even get the kind of jobs we are able to achieve now do to the hierarchy of men in our society, women are still looked down upon in the workplace. As technology has grown to the spectacle that it is now, new ways of making women feel insignificant and harassed has been exceeding with it.

Cyberbullying as a whole is something that researchers and social scientists are trying to identify and eradicate, however as a world that heavily relies on technology in order to achieve every day tasks, especially those in the workplace this is something that comes with the territory. When it comes to cyberbullying as a whole we know that it can have dramatic affects on one’s feelings and even their actions if those feelings became to much for them to handle. When it comes to the workplace, we all want to feel comfortable and accepted, especially women who as we know historically are seen as less than in this world of men.

If cyberbullying happens at work it increases the amount of stress and psychological undoing that can occur for women and impact their present and future within a company and beyond. In this article they specify how a company’s reaction to the notification of cyberbullying could affect a woman’s likelihood of remaining with the company.

This article set to reveal and to understand the psychological affects that cyberbullying has in the workplace on women specifically. The studies that were conducted involved a wide variety of factors such as comfortability within the workplace prior to the cyberbullying, loyalty to the company, psychological stress on day to day tasks vs those when coupled with the harassment. When the studies were conducted they concluded that the action or inaction of the company when attention was drawn to the issue was a huge impactor to keeping those female employees in the long run, or losing valuable assets.

In conclusion, if the company shuts down the harassment immediately and justice is seen in a manner the woman sees as appropriate she is more likely to remain with the company and find comfort in that place. However, on the other end if a company does not do their due diligence or instead ignores the issues being brought to their attention in this manner it is likely that this will have a negative psychological affect on the woman, which may lead her to leave the company as a whole due to one or few people’s actions or inaction. In the future these studies will hopefully assist with structures and policies that are put into place to not only assist with harassment against women as a whole, but also seek to diminish the threats of that harassment carrying on into cyberbullying as well.
