Week 6 Journal Entry- Fake Websites

Fake websites are on the rise with the increased use of the internet in recent years. A ton of purchases are made via the internet than ever before. This is due to the convenience of an item coming straight to you and finding the best deal for that item. With the rise of internet shopping and even looking up information you may be curious about fake websites are also on the rise to prey upon those who could fall victim easily to scams.

Some risks that occur with falling victim to fake websites are the potential loss of personal information, financial information and ultimately the risk of complete identity theft.

When searching through Google, Bing or even ads from your favorite social media accounts it is important to pay close attention to the names of the websites that are promoted and never click on any unless you are absolutely certain it is real.

A lot of hackers and people who create these fake websites are able to fool people into clicking using realistic names with slight changes to the words in them. This would include using simple word changes such as “zuperkicks” or “realkicksn0w” instead of a shoe website that would be legitimate. When you click on these sites you could be fully compromised or even simply make a purchase that ends up scamming you.

Personally, I wasn’t able to find any fake websites for this exercise. The reason for this is the insane amount of protection I have on all my devices that block these from even being options and is pretty effective, especially since this is something I can’t even compare.
