Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication
Reflection
While taking Spanish 101f, I have gotten better at speaking my vocabulary. I have never had a problem writing in Spanish because I am visual, but I would stutter a lot trying to visualize the words when it came to saying it. I still struggle with it, but over time, I started to study a lot before speaking interviews to do good. This class itself did not help me improve on my speaking, just me changing my studying habits. The hardest part of speaking was pronouncing the stem-changing verbs and speaking it sometimes. I just made little sayings to help me remember what verbs had stem-changing. Speaking is still something I can improve, but writing my compositions, I have become better and learned how to pick up the speed of writing a Spanish essay. Getting better at speaking Spanish at a decent pace isn’t all of it; it also means listening to others talk and knowing what they are saying. I have gotten better at it because my professor puts a lot of speaking parts on my exam.

Culture

Some products and practices that helped me gain an understanding of cultural perspectives was watching the cultural videos from the aventura vhl. In these videos they discussed their traditions and their way of doing them. Not only did they discuss their culture they also discussed their university. I learned about the Day of the Dead is a time for families to honour the lives of loved ones who have passed away through reflection and celebration. The day of the dead is celebrated for three days straight. A visual example of this the movie called “coco”. When learning about the skull face hispanics wear for the day for the dead and people wear it as a halloween. I seen that as very offensive and rude. I would educate some people to let them know that the skull face is part of the Day of the Dead traditions and that wearing out of those contexts is being very stereotypical.
Engaging in community
The value of community. I feel community helps keep everybody together. It has to start small before going into global community. It is some global community corporations like kroc. I did a small community group where we raised money to help students afford prom and graduation.
Interpersonal Communication
An interpersonal activity is where classmates participate in face to face( over zoom) and rehearse their reactions and create new ideas. Some of the most common interpersonal oral actives for me were the the interviews my professor gave. She would randomly select a partner and we would have a day to go over our lines and present them the next class. Over time I have grown with putting sentences and lines together so we can rehearse and show the professor we can hold a conversation with each other. Another example is randomly my professor would pick classmate to have a question no preparation just speak. I still find that difficult because I like to prepare myself. Another example is doing discussion boards. They are like mini compositions. This has helped me grow because I wouldn’t know how to spell a word or forget my accent marks , but over time it became easier. The more i did the discussion boards and in-class discussion in spanish, the more I became comfortable with it.
presentational speaking
One example of presentational speaking was when my professor wanted us to explain our family in spanish. We were only allowed to make a brainstorm just so that it won’t be hard to think of what to say,but we could not read it directly from a paper. Not being able to read what i put on the paper was hard but it helped me think quick on my feet and also teach me how to make the conversation flow.
Presentational writing
Unfortunately this semester we did not do any presentational writings these semester.
Interpretive listening
Interpretive listening is listening to a monologue and then being able to understand what is said. Some examples could be from the radio or watching tv. While taking spanish 101 some of the cultural units were videos that were in spanish. There was a closed caption but it was still in spanish. I did like listening to things in spanish it was interesting to hear people say the same words but have a different way of saying it. It was very difficult for me to keep up with how fast they were talking. I did not want to turn on the close caption because i wanted to challenge myself. I do believe that I have grown in these activities.
Interpretive reading
Unfortunately my class did not get to participate in interpretive reading.
