SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

Watching videos in class that showed the different cultures.

It gave me more of an understanding of how others act. Most of the time you are just worried about what it going on around your life. Seeing how others communicate and treat each other gives you different perspectives. Especially in America we are kind of sheltered from the rest of the world and you don’t see others struggles or things they do that make like better.

Engaging in Communities

It’s very important to know what other cultures are like. It can change your views and maybe even the way you live.

Interpersonal Communication

I thought Talkabroad was very different. It was hard but cool at the same time. It’s hard to speak to a stranger in general, but doing it in a different language is extremely hard. It was a nice experience to talk to someone from another country in their language.

I was pretty nervous as to how the interview would go but my first one was great. We talked a lot about our families and food. It was cool to hear Caesar talk about the food he liked and how we share similar likes even through we are from different countries.

Presentational Speaking

We used talkabroad along with talking with classmates and our professor. Talkabroad will not give me the video so I cannot post it.

It was kind of slow for me at first and then once I got comfortable and realized and wasn’t that bad I enjoyed it. My interviewer made me feel very comfortable. In my second talkabroad the lady wasn’t as easy going so it was a little harder but she still helped me figure out what I wanted to say.

Presentational Writing

We did make one flyer that I did on the flu. we had to include all kinds of information about how to prevent it and ways to treat it.

Along with that we had to give information about statics about the flu. It was hard trying to use the correct words and knowing how to put the flyer together but I thought mine came together pretty well and had a lot of great information.

Interpretive Listening

In lingro learning a lot of the homework involved listening to people speak and then write down what they were talking about. Sometimes it was multiple choice other times you had to type in what was said.

The different things I heard were names of people or verbs and adjectives used to described what was going on. Some times one page would be in writing and then the next one was flipped and you had to listen to what was being said.

Interpretive Reading

Each class the professor would put questions on the white board that we would have to talk to a partner about. We would use out vocab to answer.

It was hard when having to understand new words or the correct way to respond. Most of the time I knew what I wanted to answer with but saying it the right way was hard. After we talked about them with a partner we would go over each question and make sure everyone knew how to answer back to someone asking the question.
