Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity is a necessity in pretty much all technology related aspects these days and affects something as small as your personal computer (PC) to something as large as the United States federal government. As cybersecurity is pretty much a necessity in this day and age, it can be related to many majors including healthcare and engineering.
As there are many majors that cybersecurity relates to, here are just four relatively common examples:
- Computer Science
- Engineering
- Healthcare
- Business (any kind of business major)
Cybersecurity relates to computer science as cybersecurity typically protects the systems that computer science revolves around. If computer science is the study of computers and computing systems, cybersecurity would be the study of how to protect these systems. Cybersecurity could even be seen as a specific field within the relatively broad major of computer science.
Engineering is perhaps even broader than computer science as pretty much anything requires some form of engineering. In relation to cybersecurity, cybersecurity requires the engineering of certain systems and builds off of many fields within engineering such as computer engineering and software engineering.
In relation to healthcare, cybersecurity’s main goal in this field is the protection of personal data and healthcare systems. Healthcare uses many advanced technologies that are susceptible to cyberattacks such as EHR programs and other information systems. The protection of data in this field is crucial as health history is personally identifiable information that is relatively sensitive and embarassing.
While cybersecurity has been an issue now for a few decades, it really hasn’t made many headlines save for the few major attacks on large corporations such as Sony. With the advent of Covid, cybersecurity has become an even bigger problem with many companies moving to remote software and cloud storage. The protection of data is crucial to businesses as the theft of company secrets could be potentially crippling to both the business and it’s employees (employee information could get stolen, for example).
