How do engineers make cyber networks safer?

There is no perfect cyber network. Even the best networks with the most money and time put into them will have some sort of flaw that someone will eventually find and try to exploit. However, this does not mean that we should just ignore the need for a better sand safer network. This is the job of cybersecurity engineers; to ensure networks are safe and well protected.

One way cyber engineers can make a network safer is simply by monitoring it. They can do this with various software and hardware and even in some cases can get AI to do it for them. Monitoring is a great way to determine if your network is running smoothly and ensure that there is no unwanted intrusion into your network. This can even be done at home with simple, free to use software if you want to make sure your neighbor isn’t leeching off of your Wi-Fi.

Another way cyber engineers can ensure a networks safety is by performing regular software updates and patches. As time goes on, vulnerabilities can be discovered in software and therefore be exploited. Regular updates and patches means these vulnerabilities can be discovered and closed so that hackers cannot exploit them.

Cyber engineers can also ensure a networks safety by making sure that the physical systems are well protected. This can be done by using security cameras, hiring security guards, and using doors with locks (or even fancier, doors that require an RFID scanner or any other form of scanner). As important as software security is, it doesn’t matter how secure it is on the software side if the hardware side is wide open to attack.

Cybersecurity engineers are a very important part of any company, whether companies think they are or not. While not all of a companies budget should be spent on cyber defense, a decent amount should be at least allocated to ensure that a companies data is protected against even the most basic of cyber attacks.
