SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Effective reflection

I have learned several different things throughout this class. The first one being, I should not have taken this online.

I do not learn this way never have never will.

Exploring Culture

I feel like this class should also focus more on culture. I have done 250+ of those VHL assignments, let me learn something about Spanish history and traditions. I wish this class was more based off of that than the language itself. I enjoyed the lesson that we did on El Clásico. It meant a lot to see this big event and to understand it’s history

As we should be taking a dive into the culture as well as the language authentic Spanish food would be a great addition to this class. I recommend, looking for a local restaurant that does authentic dishes from the country rather than a typical chain restaurant. Maybe Luna Maya in Norfolk (https://www.lunamayarestaurant.com/) one of my favorite places to go.

Communication

I feel like during the communication sessions we could have had more authentic conversations, not just they hey how are yous but the what are you passionate about or what drives you. This helps people understand each other better rather than just grasp the concept of the language. Especially over online learning you have to really give your peers a chance and not just say hi once a semester.

Over 200 assignments completed in VHL and I am still struggling because of the connection to one another is important. I guess if I took this in person that would have helped. The most helpful person has been this guy:

I guess yes, I should have reached out to the other students in the class, however I am a non-traditional student. I work full time, I did not understand the tone of the class until 3 weeks in.

One of the biggest issues for me has been practice speaking. In a typical class, I would have created a study group like the show Community. I would have been the Abed Character, always quoting films. I believe that the online world creates the worst challenges for a learner like me.
