Exploring Culture

A product I used in this class to help me gain a better understanding of cultural perspectives is Lingro Learning. While using Lingro Learning it teaches you basic communication in Spanish, but they also have a section called Exploración cultural. This section goes over some of the spanish speaking countries and has you do activities to understand what that culture is like.

Reflection: I am honestly grateful to have had Lingro Learning as a part of the curriculum, it not only increased my knowledge, but also played a vital role in my success in this course. Lingro Learning made understanding the basics of Spanish easier. I got a greater sense of understanding of other countries and their beliefs and culture, and the similarities and differences between my own culture and other Spanish speaking countries.

Engaging in Communities

I believe the value of engaging in your immediate community and the global community is being able to Learn. Every community is different, engaging in these communities will allow for a better understanding of the things that happen in said community.

Interpersonal Communication

During this course I completed many oral/audio activities, and discussion boards. Some activities include conversation with the instructor, discussion boards, and even flip grid videos. Each of these activities tested me in different ways, allowing me to practice my Spanish speaking. The Flip Grid videos allowed for a chance to get to know classmates as this was an online course.

Reflection: During conversations with the instructor, I was tested on my Spanish speaking, I was asked a series of questions and had to answer them in Spanish, which tested my knowledge of the material throughout the semester. Discussion Boards allowed for me to have a discussion topic with classmates as this was an online class, the discussions were thought provoking, which made the activity fun and allowed for me to learn more about my classmates. The Flip Grid videos were a combination of learning while also learning about your classmates, it allowed for classmates to speak and tell you about themselves or others important to them.

Presentational Speaking

The only presentational speaking activities involved in this class were, Flip Grid videos, were I recorded my self responding to a video of the instructor speaking Spanish and filling in the blanks. They help you almost like a check point to make sure you are understanding the course material.

Reflection: During these Flip Grid videos, we filled in the blanks of the instructor’s video, we asked questions to our classmates, We even made a video about a special person in our lives. At first while completing these assignments It was difficult but as the semester went on my knowledge increased allowing for me to understand and be able to complete the assignment. I exceled at understanding the basics so it made it easier to complete the assignments, If I could do it differently, I would study more understanding the more difficult topics such as verbs and conjugates.

Presentational Writing

During this course we had a number of discussion boards that involved getting active with classmates and responding to their post. Discussion boards allow for debate/discussion of a topic while being an online student. I learned quite a bit about my classmates from the discussion boards.

Reflection: Each discussion board required growth, as we researched topics related to the Spanish speaking community. We learned about the many holidays in the Spanish world and even learned about the Famous University of Granada. As the discussion boards continued it became easier to communicate with classmates and understand their perspective of the assignment. The difficulties included sometimes having to write in Spanish, but overtime that became easier by learning the material.

Interpretive Listening

Listening activities done during this class were listening to the instructor during flip grid videos and filling in the blanks and also modules on lingro learning had videos were they explained the topics related to the module.

Reflection: During the semester we listened to different things related to the topics of Spanish from, flip grid videos, to lingro learning, even quizzes. The listening activities were fairly easier because it required that you hear what is being said and translate or answer the question based upon what was said. What was most interesting was being able to understand what was being said in Spanish because I understood what was being said because it was taught in the previous module.

Interpretive Reading

During the class we had discussion boards that required research and reading about topics such as the discussion board about the University of Granada, which required us to research and compare between the differences between UGR and an American university.

Reflection: During the discussion boards we read and did research for the specific topics related to the discussion boards. The challenge was finding accurate information to support the research topics. What I found interesting was that after researching and completing the assignments, I learned a lot about the cultural differences and some similarities between Spanish speaking countries and the U.S. My takeaway from the readings was being able to comprehend culture more. With each assignment I have grown with an abundance of knowledge that has allowed me to succeed in this course.
