SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

The Assignments in LingroLearning that required us to search the internet in Spanish for places and topics of other places and cultures was very helpful for me to gain an understanding of cultural perspectives.

These assignments helped me to compare and contrast the differences in the culture that I grew up in and that of Spanish Cultures as well as developing a respect for cultures that are unfamiliar to me. These assignments really made me “question the norm” of my own culture. Another assignment that helped expand my knowledge of Spanish culture was the Discussion Post about the 12 fiestas. I was very interested to learn of these celebrations and look forward to hearing more about them in the future.

Engaging in Communities

I think it is very important to be involved in the immediate and global community. I work at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront and during the summer, tourists visit from all over the world. After taking this class, i have a better sense of security that I can speak to customers in Spanish and make them feel more comfortable and welcome in our community.

Interpersonal Communication

Some Interpersonal Communication I had in Spanish this semester was through a Discussion Board Post.

At the beginning of the semester, I could give one word responses to certain questions in Spanish. Communicating with classmates in Spanish helped me to form full sentences and fully understand the questions being asked. I’ve realized the best practice is to just continue to have conversations in Spanish. I have an easy time translating the words and understanding what they mean. My biggest struggle throughout the semester was the changing of verbs but practicing speaking with classmates has made it a little easier.

Interpretive Listening

Some interpretive Listening activities I completed this semester where the Zoom conversations with my professor and Flipgrid Conversations. Both required us to listen to questions being asked in Spanish and respond accordingly.

I struggle with trying to translate the words in my head as they are being spoken which leads me to miss other important parts of the question. I often had to listen to the Flipgrid recordings multiple times to fully understand each question. To overcome this difficulty, I had to stop and fully listen to the full questions and it eventually became easier without trying to translate the sentence while listening.

Interpretive Reading

Throughout the semester there were a lot of assignments that required you to read passages and fill in the blanks with the proper words in Spanish. I personally struggled with these assignments the most.

In English, give a very brief 2-3 line description of interpretive communication activities you read in and out of class this semester, such as articles, stories, websites like theĀ Language Learning Center, etc. that you completed for or related to your Spanish learning. Include a copy of one of these activities; remember to cite it. (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples).

Then, write a short reflection paragraph that includes the activities you described above. What was unclear or challenging for you? How did you overcome this difficulty? What did you find most interesting or compelling? What was your takeaway from the reading? How have you grown with each assignment?

The part that was most challenging for me was using the correct form of each word when filling in the blank. I overcame this by making flash cards with the grammar tables provided by LingroLearning which absolutely helped. I still struggle to fill in the blanks when reading in Spanish but I do believe I’ve improved.
